MY COMMENTS:

Every time I wander into JB Hi-Fi this movie was playing on the wall, so I had seen bits and pieces before I reviewed this disc.
I have found Ben Stiller films either very funny or very poor and from what I had seen this film looked quite good. It sort of delivers, whilst not being his best, it is far from being his worse, and is much better than Meet The Parents.
After viewing this twice I can safely say it is worthy of being in a Ben Stiller collection.

FROM THE BACK COVER:

From director and writer John Hamburg (Meet the Parents, Zoolander) comes the hilarious comedy Along Came Polly.
When risk-averse Reuben Feffer’s (Ben Stiller – Starsky & Hutch, There’s Something About Mary) new bride dumps him on their honeymoon for a muscle bound scuba instructor, his plans for life and love are thrown wildly off track. A chance encounter with an adventure-craving, childhood friend named Polly (Jennifer Aniston – Bruce Almighty, Friends) shoots him into a whirlwind of extreme sports, spicy foods, ferrets and salsa dancing… with hilarious consequences. Can Reuben, the ultimate control freak, really change and live in the moment?

AUDIO/VISUAL:

Audio:
This DVD is presented with three audio tracks, including a two channel mix for the audio commentary. We have a 5.1 dts track and a Dolby Digital 5.1 track for the main feature, which to be honest are quite similar. Being a comedy film there is not much the dts can outperform on, and in this case it doesn’t do so. If you cannot play dts, then you are not missing out on anything.
The subwoofer provided bass for the soundtrack, but never over powered the film.
There was some great use of the surround channels in providing the sound effects, in particular one scene involving a lot of sweat and Ben Stiller’s face up against a big gut. It sounded tremendous.
Both tracks are excellent, and compliment the film nicely, but the dts mix really was not needed in the case of this film.

Video:
The video quality for Along Came Polly is quite good. I didn’t notice any examples of grain or film artefacts which I expected on such a new film. Unfortunately some aliasing was present, not usually a feature of such a new film, but it was here.
Apart from the aliasing I was happy with the presentation.
Along Came Polly is presented in a widescreen aspect ratio of 1.85:1 and is 16:9 enhanced.

EXTRA FEATURES:

Deleted Scenes:
We are treated to 6:07 minutes worth of deleted scenes with the option of comments by the director. I always like it when the director’s comments are included and why they removed the scenes from the film.
The audio is presented in Dolby Digital 2.0, and the video is in a 1.85:1 aspect ratio.

Outtakes :
Running for 4:35 minutes we have a collection of line delivery stuff ups. To be honest this wasn’t very funny at all, and certainly could be considered as being disc filler.
The audio is presented in Dolby Digital 2.0, and the video is in a 1.85:1 aspect ratio.

Making Of:
Running for 10:29 minutes this is fairly standard making of, which are generally shown on television after a movie which didn’t quite fill the hour. It contains footage of the film, as well as comments from the cast and crew and a few behind the scenes shots.
The audio is presented in Dolby Digital 2.0, and the video is in a full frame aspect ratio.

Original Opening:
The original opening of the film which runs for 1:35 minutes, and also features a director’s commentary on it. Once again the director explain why the opening was removed.
The audio is presented in Dolby Digital 2.0, and the video in a 1.85:1 aspect ratio.

Rodolfo Goes Hollywood:
A very boring featurette which runs for 4:41, and is about the ferret from the film. Not very exciting, and quite frankly sux beyond belief.
The audio is presented in Dolby Digital 2.0, and the video is in a full frame aspect ratio.

Director’s Commentary:
Definitely the best extra feature on this DVD and easily one of the best solo commentary’s put to DVD. John Hamburg provides lots of fascinating information and provides plenty of insights into the film.
The audio is presented in Dolby Digital 2.0

Theatrical Trailer:
Running for 2:29 minutes this trailer represents the film quite nicely.
The audio is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1, a real bonus for a trailer and the video is presented in a 1.85:1 aspect ratio.

DVD Credits:
Credits for who worked on the film, and runs for 0:58 minutes. Not really exciting.

MY MEMORABLE MOMENT FROM THIS DVD:

My memorable moment would be the performance by Bryan Brown. It is great seeing him in a film, particularly a comedy. He does the job superbly.

OVERALL:

Along Came Polly is quite a good film, which have some similarities to other films starring Ben Stiller. Putting this aside, fans of Ben Stiller or Jennifer Aniston will be quite happy to add this film to their collections.
The audio and video are quite good, and the extras despite plentiful really only have one or two redeeming features, such as the commentary and deleted scenes.
Along Came Polly is currently available to purchase with a RRP of $39.95.
