She wrote the show. He made the deal. Who paid the price?
She’s an idealistic young TV writer who hopes to sell a sitcom that deals honestly with the African – American experience. He’s an ambitious TV executive looking for a fresh show to energise his start-up network. Both of them are going to learn a lesson about what it takes to get a show on TV – and what it costs to keep it there.
From the writer of Spike Lee’s Get On The Bus comes the story of two people caught between success and selling out, love and compromise, ratings and reason. Nicole Ari Parker (Remember the Titans), Isaiah Washington (Exit Wounds) and The Hurricane’s Vicellous Reon Shannon star in the film that puts TV and truth under the spotlight, Dancing in September.

Audio:
Being a film which looks to be a tele-movie I was not expecting much in the audio stakes, especially when I discovered the audio track to be in Dolby Digital 2.0.
Being a dialogue based film this normally is not a problem, but in ‘Dancing in September’ the soundtrack suffers tremendously. The soundtrack features a large amount of rap beats as well as the song which shares the name of the film. The loss of surrounds and a separate sub woofer channel, removed any power these musical pieces could deliver.
For a film which was made recently and distributed by Roadshow Entertainment I was quite surprised the audio was not mastered into a 5.1 mix, but the tele-movie factor probably contributed to this factor.

Video:
Considering this is low budget compared to a big blockbuster, the video quality was quite outstanding. Sure there is some low level grain present in a few scenes, but a lot less than some other recent big name releases.
Aliasing and film artefacts were not present despite how much I looked for them.
Dancing In September is presented in a widescreen aspect ratio of 1.85:1 and is 16:9 enhanced.

There are no extra features on this DVD.

MY MEMORABLE MOMENT FROM THIS DVD:

My memorable moment would be the opening sequence featuring a number of shows from the past featuring African American actors. Good seeing Jay Jay from the Goodtimes.

OVERALL:

Dancing In September is currently available to rent only. The film may not be for everyone, but it is well worth a watching for anyone interested in the politics behind creating a television show.
