Can anyone who has a Pioneer 676A test something for me? I want to be able to output both component AND composite video at the same time, is this player capable of this?
Cheers.

I believe that you have to select which output you wish to use through the controller. Not sure if this will select the mode or actually 'switch' the outputs.

Yes.

Yes.

I can vouch for that. I have done it.

You do not need to change any settings on your dvd player. It outputs the composite and component signals at the same time.

You will however need to change the channel on your tv to switch bewteen AV1 and AV2 (or whatever your component and composite signals are connected to).

Can someone who has a 676A unit please clarify something for me, please?

I am trying to understand how muliple DivX avi files on a DVD-r will appear on the menu when the disk is inserted, to allow choosing.
The reps in two shops were unable to explain it, and the units (by default) just started playing the first one.

What I am hoping it can do is to show the list of say, 12 files, and have a small animated thumbnail next to them to help in content selection.

I have downloaded the manual, which helps a bit, but it is still not very clear. It seems to say that perhaps up to six moving thumbnails can be shown, you scroll for more.
Presumably this is after you have turned Disk Navigation on (does it then stay on, or do you have to select it each time?).

So far I've only used it for MPG files. These appear in the Disk Navigator by default. They are displayed like a low resolution 'Windows Explorer' folders menu....I haven't seen it display any thumbnails though.

Do you recall if you had to 'enable' the Navigator? Probably with the remote, and via the on-screen menu.

The Pioneer words for the animated menu are:
"ANIMATED THUMBNAILS- This new and highly user-friendly picture display shows you the titles contained in a loaded DVD, DVD-R/-RW and animates the contents for a few seconds. This will help you to retrieve your favourite content more easily."

...which really doesn't seem to mean much.

:rolling: As mentioned in a previous post about multiple avi files on a DVD writeable disc. Has anybody had the problem of being unable to read all the files on a DVD disc when loading on a 676A? I usually burn all my avi files in one session & finalize the disc. When loading & observing the menu, only the first coulpe of files come up where as when I load them onto a Zenzonic DVD player (300 & 330), all the files are readable & play without fault. Is there something in the setup programming to correct is fault? My 676A is only 3 weeks old & has the latest update (version 5.0) installed. Any info would be appreciated. I am using minus writeable DVD discs. May have to try plus.

Are you using UDF format? If so, try ISO9660.

Yeah, a good idea to check your settings, if word got out on Whirlpool that a Zensonic could do something that a Pioneer couldn't there would be a whole bunch of fan boys ready to take their own lives :D

 I have been using UDF format & will give ISO format a go. However why are my discs able to be read on a Zenzonic Player & not the 676A? I would have thought the Pioneer being a better quality player would be able to read both formats?

I don't believe either are 'guaranteed' to work with UDF.
Just lucky I guess on the Zensonic.

Was that pure UDF or UDF/ISO(with joliet bridging) because it does make a difference.
If a player supports RW media it will, or should as per standards, read UDF/ISO on RW media but not neccessarily on write once media.

 I am using pure UDF although I have tried both with joliet bridging and also have succesfully used re-writeable discs, but not with multi-session files. I'll try ISO mode 1 & 2/XA format & see how things go. I use Nero Burning ROM as my burning program for multi-session files. Thanks for the input. Will let you know how I go.

:rolling: A follow up on my last posting. Tried a multiple session using ISO Mode 1 burning a nine file session with moderate success. Where as using UDF format only the first two files were read on the 676A, the menu now shows all nine files present. However it only manages to play the first seven avi files. The same disc when using Zenzonic player also will only play the first seven files. I have tried burning different multisession avi files and get the same result. Apparently the limit seems to be seven files. Each avi file is around the 350 meg size, either xvid or divx. With burning on UDF format on the Zenzonic I have had up to 15 avi files successfly read on a DVD disc, it now seems the max I can get is seven on the 676A using ISO. Anybody got any further ideas?

 Another follow up on multi-session burning. Have since found out that the Pioneer DV-676A doe not support multi-session playback & unfinalized disc playback.(I finalize my discs after burning anyway). I managed to get hold of a fly sheet on the DivX video compatibility :
1.Plays Divx5,Divx4,Divx3,&DivxVOD video content.
2.File extensions : avi & divx (these must be used for the player to recognise DivX video files). Note : All files with .avi extension are recognised as MPEG4, but all these are not necessarily DivX video files, & therefore may not be playable on this player.
3.Media : ISO 9660 formatted CD-R/RW/ROM ISO level 1 & 2 compliant, CD physical format : Mode 1,Mode 2 XA form 1, Romeo & Joliet file systems compatible with this player.
4.Muli-session playback: No
5.Unfinalized disc playback: No
6.File Structure: Up to 299 folders; up to 648 folders & files combined per folder.

Well I guess I'll have to set my files up differently & not do a multi-session burn. This may cure my problem.
