I've got a Marantz SR5200 and I was trying to record from the radio onto my
MD but the digital out doesn't seem to carry it. I'm tipping it's because
the radio is an analog signal, but i thought maybe the amp might convert it.
I've ended up just pluging in a stereo cable to the head phones but that's a
bit of a pain because it means i can't listen to it at the same time. I've
got a 2xRCA to stereo headphones jack cable, can i use this on the back of
the amp and still listen to the radio through the speakers?

Yes that is a pain.

You can only record digital to digital and analog to analog. Dont use the headphone jack port on the receiver as it being amplified and it could blow up your minidisc player ( I wasn't aware that this was possible to do with a minidisc player, my minidisc only has optical input and USB inputs).

The best thing to do is to use the audio outputs on the back of the receiver using your 2*RCA to stereo headphones jack cable and plug into line in on a notebook computer. This will convert digital into analog and it wont be amplified.

If you have foxtel digital there is 5 music channels (cd quality) and you can record them through optical cable from your receiver straight onto your minidisc player or computer .
