I want to purchase a projector in the next couple of weeks. I personally
love the Infocus 4805 and want to purchase that but with the news of the
Panasonic ae700 release my 1 year long research into projectors has just
been dealt a huge blow.

I have up to $3000 to spend and have found the 4805 for ~ $2300 on the net.
I love the contrast and sharpness of the 4805 but the lack of resolution
bothers me a little.

The ae700 seems to have it all. Has 2000:1 contrast which I hope will be
similiar to the 4805 in contrast but the resolution is what does it for me,
however ive heard that LCD's degrade over time and that DLP is better for
home theatre. How much time are we talking about here for this to happen?
Ive heard the ae700 will be priced under $3000 is this true?

What do you guys think, should I just wait a little longer and make my
decision or should i just go out and buy the 4805 now.

Help me guys ive been procrastinating for 1 year now :)

Thanks

Somtimes I'm afflicted with the same mentality but it's easier to put it
in perspective...tomorrow I could be hit while enjoying my motorcycle or
simply be in the wrong place/time for terrorism to strike - enjoy life
for today buy for now, for some there may not be a next
month/year/whenever.

PS. I imagine both PJ would be great, I've seen 4805 but would go the
ae700 primarily because as a wedding videographer the new Sony HDV cam
would provide a HD source to utilise it.

Which is fine as long as you don't mind me _not_ funding your probable
longer life through a Government pension :)

That being said, if you're saving 10% + super and can pay for it with cash,
go for it !

If you decide to spend your hard earned money, you may as well face the fact
that *whatever* you buy will be well and truly outdated within a few years.
The AE 700 is sounding very nice indeed...

Definately dont buy infocus online. Youll save $200 and forego warranty and
everything else.

Find an aussie dealer willing to sell you one for cash at 10% off - wont be
hard.

I hear you on the pana - im in EXACTLY the same boat although Im buying in
Feb.

Wait till you can see the pana in view and make your decision, im liking the
higher res too, but lcd suffers from grey blacks, which is supposed to be
fixed with this unit. As for degradation, no, i dont think its an issue in
your lifetime.

Unless you plan on keeping it 10 years.

And rumor has it they will cost similar or slightly more than the 500, which
can be had for 2.5k

Thanks Silent Bob your comments have been helpful.

Ill most likely wait another couple weeks until I can view the Panasonic and
then make a final decision. Ive just read on AVS that even if it does
acheive 2000:1 contrast ratio, it is only applicable in high mode which
makes use of the dynamic iris therefore the 5000 hour globe wont apply.

Ill probably just end up buying the infocus and just be happy with my
purchase. Either way im sure both projectors put out superb images.

the infocus is a darn good unit
but do check the res and color different between it and the 700

forget about globe life, in the real world and in the mode you actually want
to watch in, a globe will last 1-2000 hours at best.
factor in a change once every 12-24 months depending.

If I do decide to go with the 4805 id like to ceiling mount it. The problem
is, is that I dont want the fan running 24/7. Im sure I could get an
electrician to install a wall switch to turn the projector off from there
but im not sure of the cost. Would you have any idea of what it might be or
if there are any other options?

Also with the celing mount, where will i bolt it to if the studs arent
directly in the centre of the room (most likely they arent). Do the mounts
go up into the celing and have a bar or some attachment to join onto the
studs?

Just need to clear up some of these things before I purchase so that I can
be prepared. If you know of anyone that does cheap home theatre
installations that would also be helpful.

I have the IF 4805 and the picture is stunning, running through a Sony DVD player 3 years old with no progressive scan, 3 of my friends now have them and about 20 others are saving up!. Remember the model will be old as you take it out of the box whatever you purchase.

In regard to the post re mounting the Ceiling mount, most studs are 900 apart you need to get up in the ceiling and put a slab of timber accross to hold the mount. Mine is the LP Morgan adjustable one (paid $300).

http://www.lpmorgan.com.au

The screen is the 96" dia (2.2m wide) Screentechnics Cineampro chain pull, picture pefect (paid $700). My room is 5m long. at this distance the Pj is mounted 4.1m from screen.

http://www.screentechnics.com.au

You can buy at uncle d**ks (DSE) a If remote switch for under $50 to turn the whole unit off and on, it just plugs into your ceiling PP.

Think about getting a Universal remote, mine is the MX500 and I have one remote for every devise and it works perfectly, think about $170 AUD delivered fromm the US, its very popular here in OZ.

Go here and read reviews, it gets a fantastic user rating.

http://www.remotecentral.com/mx500/index5.htm

When you instal it put in all three cables DVI, Component and Video S, then when you add other gear later like HD STB, DVD Recorder etc. they will be in place.

Hi Michael,

My suggestions to your queries:

>I'd like to ceiling mount it. The problem
>is, is that I dont want the fan running 24/7.

As far as I know the fan only runs when the unit is operational or for five minutes or so to cool the lamp dowmn at the end of a viewing session. You use your remote to switch to standby mode and to activate it again.

>Also with the celing mount, where will i bolt it >to if the studs arent
>directly in the centre of the room (most likely >they arent).

I don't know the shape or circumstance of your room but you should investigate mounting the projector on the back wall of your viewing area. This is for a several reasons.

In my opinion a projector hanging down from the ceiling is an unacceptable blight on the appearance of a room, regardless of how neat the mounting may be. It is much easier to make a very neat, attractive shelf type installation on the back wall. Lot easier tofind studs etc, on the wall too.

Also, there is a good chance that the ceiling projector may end up being mounted over your seating position. This means that you will be subject to the noise of the fan at close proximity above your head, particularly during the quiter moments of a movie. Regardless of how silent the salesman will tell you the new models are, It could be a constant annoyannce and regret.

Also, we have all grown up accustomed to going to movie theatres with the picture coming from behind us. to best replicate the cinema experience, this is where the projector should be mounted.

Up until now the HT projectors all seem to come with rather short throw distance lenses requiring the projector to be mounted in the centre of the ceiling. The exception to this was the Sony HS10 which has an optional screw on long throw lens that enables rear wall mounting (I have this arrangement).

My understanding of the Panasonic AE700 that you are considering is that they have addressed the lens / throw distance issue and are able to provide a long throw lens either as an option or an add on.

I suggest that you give serious consideration to mounting the projector on the rear wall (if your HT space permits).

If you mount it on the wall you will need to get a screen to match the distance between the PJ and screen for the throw length of whichever Pj you choose. Mine is mounted just forward of the listening position, don't notice fan noise at all.

>If you mount it on the wall you will need to get >a screen to match the distance between the PJ >and screen for the throw length of whichever Pj >you choose.

Better to tailor the lens ratio to the screen size and projector position.

The point that I was making is that the HT projectors are now coming with longer throw lenses that facilitate this. You now have a choice of distance of projector to screen.

It sounds like your projector has a fixed or limited zoom ratio lens and you need to position it accordingly to match the screen.

Much more flexibility available now.

Mines fine think the distance was 3.7m to 4.6 somehing so put it in middle of the range (4.1m).

So you possibly couldn't have put it behind you even if you wanted to without changing the screen size. A long throw lens (as is becoming more widely available) would have allowed this.

Glad that you are happy with your set up - that is the main thing.

I see what you mean, and no didn't want it behind me, think it looks good on ceiling, bit of a talking point really. I can say the picture from the IF4805 is mind blowing but then again its not for everybody if you see rainbows. From the published specs of the new Pana AE700 it looks like a beauty. I do say the man who waits can wait forever.

I used $20.00 worth of rhs and made a suitable stand , no holes and just
some coax covered by the floor mat , sits behind the main viewing couch
and is essentially invisible.. good value . much better than the 300$
hardlys wanted for a wall bracket ...
