Whilst removing an old factory fitted (Camry 91) tape deck, I accidentally
let one of the wires (+ charge) touch the metal bit causing the old deck to
fry. As the old system was connected to an amplifier (model Range TX-2000
which has NO info whatsoever on the web) ... well anyway heres what
happended:
- I saw smoke coming from the old tape deck (obviously fried).
- When I installed the new CD player I took off the -ve charge on the main
battery to prevent any more damage.
- The new CD player worked fine but I had to wire it directly instead of via
the amplifier.
The problem with the amplifier ---> doesnt power up.
- Checked the external battery to amp fuse (didnt burn)...electricity can
still run through it.
- Checked the inside of the amp (couldnt find any visible fuses)...unless
they diont have any which is kinda strange.
- Electricity seems to be getting through to the amp but doesnt power up.
I find it strange that frying a head unit can cause damage to the
amplifier....I mean Ive checked the fuse between the battery and amp and IT
IS NOT BLOWN. The interior of the box also doesnt smell like its burnt nor
does the boot (amp is in da boot).
Any ideas??
Thanks

The amp may have a remote turn on wire that you have not connected. It's usually
quite skinny and blue.

Hmm
Two things
- Yes the Sony Xplod does have a remote and an amp remote line but the
original amp doesnt.
- I cant figure it out, why the power doesnt turn up (main power for amp)
due to one wire which doesnt have any power associated with it (the remote
amp wire as u suggested).

Test the RCA audio outputs from the head unit by plugging it into your home amp. It may be that the CD player is not outputting any audio. By the way why are you posting this in the home cinema group?

So the original amp only has 12v power in and one ground out?

I don't understand what you are trying to say.

Yep,
I installed the original amp with one wire running straight from the (+) of
the battery and I connected the (-) to the metal body of the car.
The original amp has three wires from the box - A black ground wire, orange
(electric antenna wire) and a red (+) power wire. I cant seem to find any
other wires.
The original factory radio ran fine with this.
The new Sony Xplod I purchased has this Amplifer Remote wire which connects
to the amplifier...cant seem to find a wire from the amp that connects to
this.

It's possible that the antenna wire was used as a remote turn on wire and when
the radio was turned on the amp detected that that it should turn on.
Try it at your own risk, but you may find it turns on if you connect it to the
remote wire of the radio.

Did you check all THREE possible fuses...??
(possibly) one in the unit.
(Oh you DID check there..)
One under to bonnet in a main fuse box (radio, Acc.. etc..)
(apart from the main 50/60/80A fuse from the battery)
One in the fusebox inside the car.. usually around the drivers side
somewhere.
Can't read this whole thread so not sure what you have tried..... but I did
one recently and found TWO blown fuses when the old tape player had a fit
and died.

By the sounds of things, the amp you had in there isn't much chop - you'll probably find the sound
quality is better straight out of the Sony deck than via. the cheapo amp if you do manage to get it
working. I certainly found that was the case with my Rover - had a tiny Kenwood amp that used to
power the front speakers. When I bought a Pioneer deck, I hooked the amp back up again, but found
the clarity of sound coming straight out of the deck was far better and louder without distortion.

Well didnt know what other forum to post it under.
I did test the RCA audio outputs from the head unit by simply plugging it to
a set of sound blasters (which worked fine).
The thing is, the amplifier's power light is off which is kind of worrying!

Huh? I dont know where specifically you are talking about.
> One in the fusebox inside the car.. usually around the drivers side

Checked there but I dont know if amps are hooked through that. Here is a
short description of how my amp is hooked up:
- I have a long wire attached from the (+) of the battery run along the car
and into the boot where I plug the red (+) cable to.
- I have hooked the ground wire black (-) to a metal bolt on the metal
interior of the boot.
- I dont see any wires attached to the fuse box inside the car.
I dont know if the Radio/Cassette deck the one that fried ...it had a fuse
in the fusebox but I dont know if its that coz there is no specific fuse
dedicated to the amp. If so, then it gets even weirder as I installed the
new Sony xplod CD player without replacing the fuse.
