I don't know if it'll work for you other 558 users but here is the fix.
Some divx and xvid movies I tried to play was either choppy or had weird colours and it was very blurry like as if it couldn't render the frames in time.
I was about to give up on this player and get another one. But this fix seems to make all the movies play fine now.
Here it is,
Play the movie that isn't working good. and while its playing press SETUP
and then just go exit.
Now it'll continue playing the movie with clear pictures.

Hope it works for all of you's
Please leave some feedback on how it works

Enjoy

They are $170.00. They may be more in the shop but just quote the price on the Strathfield website (www.strathfield.com.au) and they will give it to you at that price.

i got the dvx558, it works with most divx files i burn. However, when i burned some divx movies onto dvd-r disks the player didn't even recognise the disk. It just ejected it after trying to load for a few seconds. I've read that some ppl have gotten dvd-r to work, but is that for proper dvds only ? (ie. like a backup of a real dvd or you know an avi converted to the proper dvd files)
Because for me dvd-r's with avi's on it don't work!
Considering buying a zensonic now, but the player is only 2 months old!

I've had no trouble playing AVI's from DVD-R media, you may find that another brand of media is more successful, some users reported that some brands are not the best, I've even used Princos without issue on this player. You should also make sure that you are burning in a single session, multi session recordings are not supported, also try slowing down the burn speed, this can often help.

hahaahha
oh man now i know why. Thanks jok11n, thanks for clearing it up :)
Nero asked me to burn in multisession or not... i decided to go multisession.

Thanks again. I was already considering buying another mpeg4 player because of it :P

Lucky then, multisession is not supported by other players either, it really would have annoyed you if you bought a new player and then found out.

and to make matters worse i read that there aren't any firmware upgrades or anything for the dvx558. I read on another thread that you said there is a firmware upgrade for it being created. Will it be out anytime soon?

I asked for feedback re a firmware update, anything that might have been noticed and I have had very little response, some of the things that have been asked for are not possible anyway, such as support for GMC and QPEL as the ESS chipset cannot support these. Unless there are requests for things that are supported by the chipset there will be no update. It's only a basic player but it does work ok out of the box.

Sorry thanks should have been to Obtainr, I've been using my dvx558 for a while and for the $99 I paid, Its great. No issues with Princo DVD-R or Verbatim DVD-RW works fine. Came region free, I tried several other brands of DVD -R (Pioneer,Melody, Shintaro, Laser) and CDR, CDRW all fine ( I use an older Pioneer 105) . Occasional issues with fast forwarding a Divx with sound getting out of sync, ok if watching it without fast forward. Also an occasional issue after playing several divx's or the player has been left on for a long time say overnight, Movies then play with no audio. A power off and on fixes the issue. I have also experienced the weird video smearing and I have tried your fix of the setup button hey It works, how the hell did you find that one? I have been re-encodng etc in an effort to solve this but your method works!!.
Thanx for the tip.

Most likely these are just one of the unsupported formats.

Perhaps, but not all avi's are created equally, get yourself a copy of gspot and check each file, you will probably found that the encoding varies amongst the files that you have. Things such as gmc and qpel are not supported by your player, also some combinations of bitrate, audio type will not work either.
