Howdy,

VCR just died in a stinking heap so now in the market for a PVR.

Already have Foxtel and a Teac ITV D500 stb.

Simply want some sort of device to replace the VCR to record from both TV
out of STB and Foxtel.

Does this exist? I can't seem to see a device like that that doesn't have a
STB built into it??

I would also LOVE to find one with an ethernet/usb connection in it that
would enable me to utilise the hdd in the PVR via the PC.

For this you're probably looking at either a hacked TiVo
(see http://minnie.tuhs.org/twiki/bin/view for details) or one of the
many DVD recorder units.

Most of the PVRs that are available here are for digital broadcast TV
only, they won't take an analogue signal (e.g., the output from your
Foxtel STB). TiVo will, though, if you're up to the work required to
get one going.

Another option might be a HDD based DVD recorder, eg Panny E100 etc. They
take an analogue signal to the HDD from a PAY TV STB, analogue only FTA
tuner though andt it's no PVR in the stricktest sense as it has no guide.

No perfect units in AUS yet (if ever)... unfortunately.

Pioneer 510 DVD recorder with 80Gb hard drive. It has three inputs for DTV,
satellite or whatever you like.
Look for these to be discounted shortly as a the 160Gb hard drive model is
just about here.

I run a PC running linux backend with a HDTV card using mythtv
(www.mythtv.org) which feeds an xbox frontend
(http://www.cyber-fish.com/mythtv/). This acts as a PVR, HD-STB, media
player, Internet browser, weather guide and games machine. Plus, it also
acts as a streaming media player for DIVX, XVID etc. files located on other
PC's (or on it's own HD).

You can have multiple cards in the backend enabling PiP, multiple recordings
and you can mix and match HDTV cards with Satellite cards, analogue capture
cards etc.

Very good solution that is (nearly, see below) perfect and here now. See
screenshots here:

The only problem is that it can be tricky installing the software, but
nothing that a few forums and instrauctions from different places doesn't
fix!

Interesting, thanks for the info.

I have a similar setup, in that I stream to the TEAC ITV-D500 stb...... but
the streaming is only MPG, and only just OK quality wise, due to the speed
limitations with USB 1.1.

I don't have a capture card in the PC, but was thinking about this as an
option.

Does your setup enable you to record Foxtel? or just TV?

You can do Foxtel 2 ways. One is to use an analogue capture card (or DVB-T
card with analogue input) with foxtel feeding in to it. Or, there may be a
way to use a DVB-S card (satellite decoder PCI card) to receive foxtel.
Please note that I don't do this and don't know how, but I have heard that
it may be possible.

I just run one DVB-T card, but will upgrade to 2 cards shortly (for HD-PiP).
