Hi All!

Just picked up a Panasonic 86cm 200a CRT and connected it up, after making
Major extensions to our humble TV and AV racking.

I have a Strong 5390 STB with Hard Drive.

I have had the strong STB for about 10 months connected to my old 1998 model
68cm Pana TV via composite, switched through receiver (Old 1998 Yamaha
receiver with only composite switching) and never had a problem

The Strong box has a "S" video connector but I have never used it before
now.

When connected to the Panasonic 200A via the rear "Svideo" lead the picture
is virtually Black & white with only a little red showing as faint orange
and the picture is Very Grainy.

When connected through the composite (RCA) lead the picture is fine.

I have tried using the front svideo in through the tv with the same result.

I tested the Svideo cable (I only have one of them) by connecting a DV
camera to the TV for playback and it seemed to be ok.

Is there a setting on the Strong box that selects output between Scart /
Svideo sockets? There is a section in the manual that touches on Scart
output modes but I cant get passed the roughly translated .....???
English.....??? OR... is there a setting buried in the Panasonic 200a menu
to accept the svideo signal over the other composite inputs on the same AV
channel? (Svideo is an additional socket on AV1)

Has anyone has this problem before? Maybe someone with a Strong box using
Svideo out?

Any suggestions for what may be the problem (either Pana CRT or Strong STB
setting somewhere in the menus?)

Should I get hold of a Scart-Component lead and settle for that?

Any suggestions would be welcomed and greatly appreciated!

Thanks............... Gary...

PS- Picked up the Pana 86cm 200A for $3050.00 at Good Guys Capalaba
(Brisbane) Sunday 26-9-04 (There getting cheaper!)

This may help with regards to your scart problem.
Threads in Forum: DVD Stuff & Home Entertainment
Posted 26/9/04 by nsu Titled: "Use s-video with Digital Foxtel" was very helpful to me:

"The problem I had was caused by the cable. There are two kinds of Scart-SVideo cables. Basically one is used to connect S-Video to TV (TV Scart), the other is used to connect Scart Device (eg. VCR/STU) to S-Video TV (VCR Scart). The problem is all the cables on the market in Australia are TV Scart. I bought one today from DSE and it sure is the TV Scart. Luckily the Scart connector can be opened. A simply modification will make a TV Scart into VCR Scart.

TV Scart uses pin 20 and pin 18 (ground) for Luminance In. (on top of pin 15 for Chrominance In)
VCR Scart uses pin 19 and pin 17 (ground) for Luminance Out. (on top of pin 15 for Chrominance Out)

The only thing one needs to do is to release the pin 20 from the socket and put into the pin 19 position. And pin 18 to 17 if needed."

This may or may not help....Good luck

Hi Frank,

Thanks for your suggestion.

I got the svideo lead working,

As I originally thought there was a setting in the Strong STB menus.

The manual doesn't mention the setting and it was overlooked by me when I
was looking for it!

There is a setting in the set-up menu that is for "video mode" That setting
needed to be set to "Y/C" to enable the svideo out socket.

The only way I found it was browsing through the DBA Australia
http://www.dba.org.au/ site forums and came across a thread which mentioned
STRONG Australia had written a supplement to the crappy manual supplied with
the unit.

The supplement is downloadable PDF file which explains a lot about settings,
connections and operations of the unit that doesn't even get mentioned in
the original manual. I would highly recommend anyone who has this STB to
have a look. http://www.strong-technologies.com/frmDownloads.aspx# Look
under manuals / Australia etc.......

There is also a firmware upgrade for the box which I might tackle when I get
the chance!

Thanks again for your suggestion! I will take it on board in case I decide
to upgrade to scart out socket > Component in the future!

Cheers!.................. Gary....
