Hi all,

Instead of forking out $500+ for a decent fabric screen I'm considering
painting my wall with a reflective coating.
Apparantly you can produce images exceeding fabric screen quality this way
and for less money.
Does anyone know any paint solutions / vendors / or have experience wth
painting projector screens?

Thanks for any feedback,
Mark

You could try screen goo at http://www.hometheatrepc.com.au/default.php?cPath=42
$330 is less than 500+ and this paint is supposed to be pretty good.

I picked up a 16/9 110 inch image screen from here http://www.scannerplace.com.au/projectors_options.htm for my Panny AE500E. The service was great and the screen came 2 days after I paid and no I don't work for either of the these companies. I have just purchased products from them that work and offer great value.

Google the group as there has been much discussion and I expect you will
find the answer there.

You have a couple of options.

1./ Get a sheet of gyprock, paint it with ceiling white, screw it to the
wall, put a black frame around it (MDF or pine). Total cost about $60 or $70
and a couple of hours work.

2./ Buy something like a screen technics fixed screen same size, flat white
finish. Cost? About $1000.

Difference in performance. Probably none that you would notice and certainly
not anything that you can't put up with for $900 in savings. Did it myself
and the results are great.

Cheers,
Nick.

Yes, did the same thing but just used the existing gyprock :) Would need
to see something side by side to believe anything else could be better -
stunning images! Got some timber for frame, painted with matt black, screwed
it into wall. Under $40 including roller/tray kit, 4 litres ceiling white
(was cheaper than 1 litre at K-Mart!), 1 can matt black enamel spray and 4
lengths of timber. I was surprised at how much difference the border made -
like having a tele on the wall! :)

Hey Martin, I haven't seen fluid systems before. The gyprock ideas are good and very cheap. I have an Lcd pj and with the glass bead screen I can see a difference to matt white screens used at the good guys or hardly normal. Not quite so crisp an image. But $330 against $40 is a hard argument if you are tight on cash. I can't wait to see the new Sony black screen when it's released.

I recently purchased a NEC HT1100 DLP projector, was very undecided about
buying the right screen until I set it up at a mates place to watch the
grand final, he had prepared a gyprock wall with 3 coats of ceiling white &
black timber boarder frame, also watched several dvd's & the decision was
easy.
Went out & bought 4L ceiling white $13.95, roller / tray $4.95, timber
frame $4.00 per m, 1 can flat black paint $3.00.
You need xray vision to be able to tell the differance....

It helps if you add a little metal fleck , we used a silver powder into
the the last one we did and intend trying crushed glass shortly .
