You really are about to open a can of worms - as most people get rather attached to their purchases, and their are lots of strong opinions around here. It would be better if you searched here ....

DBA HD STB forum (http://www.dtvforum.info/index.php?showforum=4)

My two cents worth is ...

Teac, Topfield or Toshiba for STB (Just make sure you get a HD, not a SD box). Forgive me if this seems like an obvious comment, but I have seen a few HD CRT tvs with SD boxes, the owners being unaware of the diference.

I guess you could also wait for a HD STB with PVR (ie recording HD STB) BUT they always seem to be being released "soon". See the above link for more info.

Video Connection - Component

Audio - Digital out via receiver (Optical if available)

Get reasonable quality cables.

Pardon me for asking, but what sort of price did you pay for the 86 200a Pannie? There are several links where we are trying to collate this info.

Regarding ... I know i can get it for 3 grand easy maybe less :)

If your place is in Sydney then I would love to know. I have been able to get Bing Lee to about $3250 (although not waving the cash in front of their eyes yet)

remove the no.spam bit though.

In Sydney, Dick Smith Powerhouse in Moore Park is the best place to go. I got my 76cm version there a few months ago, and at the time, 2400 was easily the lowest price available anywhere. I think the 76 is going for 2000 now! It's runout time on this model so you should be able to get a great deal on the 86.... Moore park is a good place to go as you can bounce between Harvey Norman, Bing Lee, HomeZone etc etc until you get the lowest price... and then go to Dick Smiths where they have everything in stock and should beat any quoted price. They wheeled my box to the counter for me, I paid, and then they took it down in the lift and helped me put it into the car. Was v impressed with the service....!

[QUOTE=slamdunka]will HD really make any difference when compared to SD on this size screen?

You should have a look at the panasonic or sony HD CRT screens in a shop that sets them up properly. Even my wife noticed the quality as soon as she walked in - and her knowledge of displays usually extends to knowing the difference between black and white and colour. The 86cm screen is fantastic, whilst even the 76 cm screen is still very good. I prefer the panasonic because of cost / size and personal like of the pannie screen, but many prefer the sony. The difference between SD and HD is chalk/cheese. Even DVD's look stunning on the screen.

My only dilemma is the new NEC plasmas (and yes, I realise it is heresy to go from a CRT to a plasma) look superb. The 50XR4W (and 42Xr3) is rather stunning - and at $8200 for a 50 inch screen - I am very tempted to spend the extra $5000 dollars.

I suppose it depends on how close you sit to the TV. You wouldn't want to me
more than 3 metres away for a screen that size, or HD would be a waste of time,
I _suspect_.
