Im SO SO SO keen to see this unit going. avs is going spastic about it,
although i dont buy the 6000:1 nonsense, if its the case, itll be better
than infocus $9,000 projector the 7205, which for an lcd, i doubt. but ill
wait to see it in the flesh and reserve my judgement till then! good work
trev.

There are many ways to measure contrast. To give an impressive number you can do it in two ways, either go very bright or very black. In the past LCD can never go black so contrast is always so so comparing with DLP. Things can change with the new tech, auto Iris. According to Sony, the number quote by Sony is only achievable with auto iris. Which means you get a very dark (black) image when there is no image (black) by closing the iris (like put on the lens cap so you block all light). Then you can go all the way, open wide the iris and give a very bright white image. By measuring contrast this way, you can get an impressive number easily. But you should know that you can never have 6000:1 on the same image (black and white checkerboard).

This is not a bad thing though. No matter how good your pj is, there is always one area that a digital pj fail miserably. That is total darkness, like those in transition between scenes, or all lights turn off in a concert. The best you can get is dark grey where there should be no light at all. If an auto iris can block all (most) light and give a true black image. This alone will attract me to buy it. I can't wait to see one in action!

Please keep in mind that with fixed iris setting, the contrast drop to a little above 1000:1. That is a more realistic figuare.

Great post PKK!

Anyone know where we will be able to see one of these being demo'd in Sydney - in a good, properly dark room?

Sony Central in Chatswood's Mandarin Centre or Sony Style in Fox Studio should have it when it arrived. But there is no mention of it in their website.
