Just wondering if 1x DVD-R's can be used to burnt home movies.
Would it affect the playback?

no not really, 1x is only the given speed at which they burn, they spin as any other normal disc would

They can be used but unfortunatly I dont think modern burners allow you to burn at 1X.

Are you asking because you are concerned about data retention and realiablity?
If so I would put them on media designed for archival purposes.
I would look into getting some TDK or verbatum discs and I believe DVD+R is more reliable for data storage (im not 100% sure though). They cost more but I would feel more confortable with these discs for this kind of data.

I am looking for cheap media with a printable surface. JB has some 1x's on a spindle, cheap. Can't remember how much but it was cheap when I was looking. It was advertised as data discs, whereas the others (4x and above) ; data and video.
I burn at slow speeds anyway because of the problem with certain media.
These DVDs are of some lectures on video I need to distribute.
So the price of the discs would be a rough guide for their quality?

You can buy Ritek -R 4x for about $30~$40 for 50 Discs, these seem to be good quality and are quite cheap.

I suppose If you've got the 2 hours for a full dvd to burn at 1X, then the cheapest media you can find would probably do (reliablity wouldn't be too good I'd imagine), but for an extra few dollars a dvd can be done in less than 30 mins and on good quality media. The difference would only be a few dollars.

Where did you find the Ritek -R 4x at that price?
Are these with printable surfaces?

BTW Thanks, you guys for the help.

Those were from JPLDigital, there are plenty of places around with them at a similar price.

Thanks redbears.
Just ordered a pack from them.
I think you mean JPL Displays.
The inkjet cartridges are pretty cheap too.
