Finally got the chance to see this(via my local Video shop getting the DVD in today....RENT only )- as have heard some excellent things about it.
Just wondering what peoples thoughts are on it(Donnie Darko) and whether you loved, liked or just Hated it.
Just finished watching it- what a MIND BLAST(particulary the ending). Great film- and one I will be getting from R1. If you haven't seen this as yet- do yourself and go out and hire it!!

I love this movie and it is one of those movies where my appreciation grows for it the more i watch it.A future cult classic for sure and i love the way the director tipped is hat to another cult classic when donnie goes to the movies.Dont expect to love it first up cause it's diffrent to any mainstream stuff out there and you will probably take a while to come to terms with what you have just seen.I have it in my top 5 movies of 2002 for sure.
"Sometimes i doubt your commitment to sparkle motion"
P.S.This movie is showing 8.3 on the IMDB and is sitting at 91 in the top 250 movies of all time. This is astounding when you consider alot of people hate movies like this that challenge us to really think outside the square. It must have had a profound affect on alot of movie lovers.

I have this On Order as we speak.
Am looking forward to giving it a spin and forming my own opinion on it.
Whilst stuff that's way out there doesn't really grab me, I do like stuff that veers off the mainstream path...

I hope this is good. I just redeemed an Amazon.ca promotional certificate when they screwed me once before. Cost me exactly $0.00 for this sent via slow post... Cannot complain, and if it sucks Im sure someone will take it off my hands

Tsargard, lets just say you shouldn't have too much trouble selling it or even putting it on Ebay- if you don't like it, probably a very popular title at the moment, one that someone would grab with no hesitation.
The music that is used in the film is great too(not only the score but the soundtrack as well).

I thought it was very whacked, but also very good. :p
To be honest, I still don't fully understand the ending, and don't really feel motivated to find out.
Sometimes not knowing is better ;)

The key to understanding donnie darko is revealed when his thearapist says his medication was just plecebo's.Donnie is not mentally ill, just a confused teenager trying to make sense of his place in the world. The thing he is most confused about is if he should believe in god.He is an agnostic looking for proof. The rabbit visions are the devil trying to tempt donnie to the dark side.Gretchin represents god when donnie discovers true love for the first time in his life. When the rabbit kills gretchin donnie rejects the devil and believes in god for the first time in his life.He is given the chance to travel back in time to week earlier and sacrifice his life to save god.Donnie=christ,Gretchin=god, rabbit=the devil.

I watched it a couple of months ago, and still don't understand it, but that synopsis sounds a little too deep eric.
:(

It defiantely makes sense, but it's just the christian way to analyze the film really, like so many other films - I've seen all sorts of films that, according to the religoin teachers at the high school i went to, had all manner of deep underlying 'christian' meanings. Persnally I found most of what they were claiming to be bollocks, but it's easy to anylize any film by saying 'such and such = biblical figure X, bla bla = biblical figure Y'.
Not to say EricB is wrong, but it's just one of many ways to interpret a film.

It's a very deep movie, maybe the deepest in a long time.Go to deleted scenes no.10 losing faith,no.16 watership down and No.19 placebos with richard kelly's commentary on and he makes it perfectly clear that the central theme of the movie is donnie's inner conflict on belief in god. Many wonderful scenes where cut so the film wasn't to long and in richard kelly's words"So we didn't hit people over the head with the athiest vs agnostic view of religon".
One can only hope we get a directors cut someday cause clearly richard was unhappy that some scenes where left out.

Yeah Maggie is great. Excellent support performance and Darko, and just an all round natural beauty.
Back on the film, definitely a top film. Even though I only just watched it last night, I feel like watching it again already.
and Amazon are replacing my screwed disc which is good - so in a month or so I'll have that 2nd view with those 4 kleenex
