Windows XP Professional - Disk Cleanup Tool

Yesterday evening I used the Disk Cleanup Tool, to remove temp internet files
and compress old files etc. When the tool started to do its job, I recieved a
notification to insert the Windows XP CD back into my system as critical
files had been removed, I did this and tried to stop the Disk Cleanup. It
wouldn't stop! Afterwards when it did stop, almost everything had been
deleted from my system, including destop theme, icons etc. Nothing would then
work. I tried to undelete as much work as I could and had to re-install my
system again this morning.

I have Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2. Running on an AMD Athlon
XP2400+, 256MB DDR400, 120GB Seagate SATA Drive, 64MB GeForce FX5200 and
Gigabyte GA7-400N Pro2 mainboard.

Has anybody else suffered this problem? Or can anybody explain why it may
have happened?
