View Full Version : hp pavilion laptop not booting please help
I am working on a friend's hp pavilion ze4400 laptop and it won't boot or
anything. He is running xp home. When i press the I\O button it won't respond
but if i hit the mail button or other shortcut buttons it will turn on but
only briefly. It boots up to show HP pavilion logo and then shuts off again.
Also, I did manage to get \press f1 to setup and press f12 to continue but
then it shut down again. I believe he said he had viruses but was getting rid
of them with norton and then the pc wouldn't boot. any help is appreciated.
thank you.

HP Pavilions that ship with Microsoft Windows XP do
not come with Recovery CDs. Instead, they use a hidden
space (partition) on the hard drive to store the recovery
information.
Read the following article thoroughly, then follow
the steps outlined to perform a "non-destructive"
recovery operation.
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?lc=en&cc=us&docname=bph07145&product=71013&dlc=en&lang=en
If a "non-destructive" recovery will not work, then you'll have
to resort to a "destructive recovery" which will reformat the
drive, thus wiping it clean of all files before Windows XP is
reinstalled.

Thanks Carey. The only thing is I can't even get to the setup screen to do
the recovery hitting f10 or anything. The screen comes up with HP and then
shuts down no matter what i hit. I'm starting to think it's a hardware
problem.

Hi Paul,
If it doesn't get out of the POST, then it's likely a hardware issue. When
the HP logo shows, hit <escape>, then watch the POST lines, see what is the
last thing it does before it shuts off.

Thanks Rick, the only thing it does is shut right back down. I haven't even
gotten a single line other than that. Just HP and gone, shuts right off.

Hi,
Time for a shop then, if his warranty has run out. I doubt it is a virus
problem though, as it doesn't get that far.
