View Full Version : XBOX Issues with Seagate or WD Drives?

I have been told not to get a Seagate or Western Digital Drive for my XBOX as they have "issues" with installs in XBOXs.
Is it more likely that it's just the chip the guy uses that has issues? I have a Maxtor 80GB I can put in, but I just installed it into my PC and left the 120GB Seagate for my XBOX.....*sigh*

What does everyone else have in their XBOX?

45Gb IBM.... better in the box than the PC. I find some games load slower from the HD?? WTF eh!

I think the issue with the drives is the rotational speed of 7200rpm. Some installers seem to prefer 5400rpm, which I'd say is due to less heat build up, which in turn would reduce warranty claims.

Personally I couldn't give a toss as I don't play games on it 24/7.

I think 120Gb is over kill. Better off with that much space in the PC and backup stuff from the xbox to the PC until you need it later.

I got a 120g seagate in mine and have had no dramas.

I've sometimes wondered about over-heating but have never felt my box get hot. [LOL].

If that guy doesn't recommend Seagate, that's cause he's probably trying to get some more $$ out of you for some crap no-name brand he has out back...

Oh, and an important thing to remember... I've heard that the HD's are only installable if they have a 1meg cache [? meg or gig; cant remember which] as the new 8 gig/meg (?) cache HD's aren't compatable.

Make any sense? :o

He doesnt mind if I supply the hard disk - he recommended IBM or Maxtor.

Looks like I'll be doing some swapping and changing and backing up of my 80GB in my PC. Oh well.

I've got my Maxtor 80GB drive in the XBOX now.
When it was running in the PC, it did seem noticeably cooler than the Seagate.....that can only be a good thing.

Ended up with a DX Chip, with on/off switch. Presintalled with the latest EvoX Bios, XboX Media Player 2.3, SNES and Gameboy Advance Emulators, and Xbox Live.

All works a treat, now I'm off to make my own dashboard skins ;)

Its true nearly all HDD's will work in a Xbox up to 133 Gig

Problem is the Xbox has extremly poor cooling around the HDD, although there is a fan at the back, there is very little airflow around the HDD.

Seagate's and WD's seam to generate more heat than the other brand drive (remember the Xbox was designed only to ever take 5400RPM drives)

Maxtor is the only 7200RPM drive that will run cool in the xbox. Not saying a Seagate/WD 7200RPM wont work, but it has a much higher chance of failure. I have seen a few Barra's develope bad sectors after a few months in a Xbox.

2 ways around this are liksang in HK have a auto HDD cooler, its a fan that snaps onto the side of the xbox, and supplies extra cooling around the drive, or Mod the fan on the Back, it is actually a 12Volt fan but is running at 7 Volts (to limit noise I suspect), cut the black wire on the fan and attach it to the GND, this will now run the fan at 12Volts. I have done this in my Xbox, I have already had 3 WD1200JB 7200RPM drives die in that box, and I am not taking any more chances. This however makes the Xbox noisier.

8M cache drive are a waste of money in the xbox, it wont be able to take advantage of the extra speed (it uses ATA33).

I have been told the new seagate 7200.7 drive are cooler than the old Barra V's, I will try one this weekend!!

The best drive is the Samsung V60 120Gig 5400RPM but these are like hens teeth and are very expensive.

Hi,
this is my first post ever on this site....
anyway, you can tell by my name who modded my xbox...

Can someone tell me where to look for the supposed
mod chip they installed?
Or maybe a web link for a photo of a modded box, showing where...
Im tech illiterate, making it easy for installers to take advantage
IMO.
I mean, I dropped the xbox at mod guys place, and he says something like ,"Be about an hour, you know reprogramming bios
software, so you want to go to the shops or whatever?"
Which i think means he didnt want me to watch him "install"
the chip.
WHen I showed up 2hrs later, no weed to pass time!
he was happy to show me the hdd upgrade but had already put
the dvd drive back in , I guess the chip is under there....

Can someone explain a bit about the term, "flashing bios or something like that? Jacob might help me on this....
What exactly is involved in xroads installation process?
Im thinking of opening my xbox but I have to remove xroads
warranty sticker, which is probably really only there to stop me
exposing the truth!
Mulder! Scully! Whats going on?

One more thing, removing dvd rom drive, no troubles taking apart
as long as it goes back the way it was removed?
Could forrest gump do it I mean? remove drive and put back in no worries?

Sorry if I repeated myself a bit....
I just want the truth from somebody who isnt a mod site flamer...

Yeah settle the F**K down.
Least you only paid $150, Xroads charge $200+ in Sydney.
So you will never be able to play xbox live, and everytime you upgrade your bios you risk killing your xbox.

BTW: their warranty isnt worth sh*t
I have had 2 Xroads customers contact me, as they have had no help from xroads, they just feed you BS!!!!
"Yes we are working on a Disable" HOW, If you disable the onboard bios, you have nothing and the xbox wont boot (you can do a multibios tsop flash) but this doesnt work with 1.2 or 1.3's xboxes or with the latest X-ecuter2 bioses, & even if it did ,Xroads are not that smart!!!!

Least you got a free 10Gb drive in your xbox.... lol

looksee at my supposed mod chip....
