Were we hit by a spammer or something?

Every single thread says reply by someone called MartL, but when I click into the thread.... nada.

they were deleted . however martl's name still appeared as the last poster on each thread

Yes, the time wait between posts can be increased further. The side effect is it may create a problem for a faster typer, there seems to be a few amongst our members.:)
