The max you can go really is 120 gig,it must have a 2meg cache aswell, these can be picked up for around 249 from computer stores, try eyo even.you will need to have a switch on your mod chip for xbox live, but the larger drive wont affect it,you will also need the original games in the machine at the time.
Try most brands, seagate and weestern digital from experience have no probs with normal use.

Any computer guy can install it for a fee,you will need a new dashboard though ,get slayers, tis pretty easy.Do a search in this forum for all the info as we have all covered this topic a few times.

You can fit the 8Mb version, but I do not think it is worth the extra money.

I picked up an 80 Gig Seagate for $160 and had it installed for free with the mod chip.

Best drive for the xbox is the Maxtor, only 7200RPM model that runs cool.
The actual Limit @ the moment is 133Gigs, although they are working on a new bios with a built it drive overlay that will support drives 240 Gig +

a 120Gig drive might seam like a lot, but I have only 45 Games, 16 Anime DIVX, and 80 Mp3's on mine and its full (and 1400 snes roms & 160 GBA games)

with the modchip disable the xbox will only see the first 8 Gigs
Partitions C (520M) ,E (5 GIGS), X (700MB), Y (700MB) Z (700MB)

PARTITIONS X,Y,Z are for game cache (textures, sounds ect)
Your big fat F Partition (72 Gigs on a 80Gig drive) is invisable, xbox live doesnt even detect it.

Any mod chip will support hard drive swapping.Y a bigger hard drive?well if you want to load divx ,mp3s and games onto it you will need a bigger drive.Say you wasnt to take your xbox to a mates place and instead of taking 45 games you just take the box. Also you can hire a game and load it to the drive and then return the game when its due,Then you can continue playing the game. When you have completed it then you can delete it.Saves on hiring it over and over again.

From my experience not all chips support larger drives.

I saw a recent drive swap where the chip would not recognise anything over the original size.

Quality chips would not have a problem I guess.

Some of the early ones do not, I have had to change a few modchips to fit drives to xbox's. You can FTP games from one xbox to anouther without using a PC. Handy for xbox lans.
