View Full Version : Should the Pioneer DV-676A get Divx subtitle support?
As discussed in the main Pioneer DV-676A thread here:
http://forums.eyo.com.au/showthread.php?p=724362
This is a follow on from posts in that thread regarding Divx subtitles:
http://forums.eyo.com.au/showthread.php?p=724362#post724362
The Pioneer DV-676A currently does not have Divx subtitle support. The DV-676A's sister model in Europe - the Pioneer DV-575 (http://www.pioneer-eur.com/eur/product_detail.jsp?product_id=8533&taxonomy_id=62-84) - has just received a firmware update to support Divx subtitles (http://www.pioneer-eur.com/eur/products.jsp?category=divx_firmware&category_id=222&taxonomy_id=62-84) as discussed on the Divx.com forums (http://forums.divx.com/viewtopic.php?topic=61926&forum=21), so we know that subtitles on the DV-676A is possible.
If you would be interested in the Pioneer DV-676A if it had subtitle support, or have a Pioneer DV-676A and would like subtitle support, please respond to this poll. If you own another Divx player with/without subtitle support - good or bad - and want to comment, I think that would be welcome too.
Also if you can provide any good reasons for Pioneer to add subtitle support to the DV-676A, please post them :).
Sorry about the double thread post :( My browser froze up submitting and I couldn't work out how to add the poll to the original thread (or how to delete it). Oops.
I would definitely like DivX subtitle support. All i can understand is english - so this is definitely required for any foreign language films.
Even in english films, subtitle support can come in handy - when people are being noisy, or you have to keep the volume low for various reasons.

THe poll is missing the vital choice- Would you consider buying this unit even though it has no subtitle support
More critical than all the other options given, unless of course the poll is here specifically to acheive a desired result.
Interesting thing is, over the years that DVD has become the domestic standard I have yet to meet anyone that is interested in subtitles. I am just wondering what makes this insignificant thing such a 'big' requirement for mpeg4 players(and i bet thats what the manufacturers think as well). The first generation of DVD players defaulted to subtitles on, why would the bulk of the manufacturers move to a default of off unless the masses were not interested in subtitles.
My wife and I nearly always have subtitles on with DVD's.
Neither of us are hard of hearing, but just find that it makes it easier to follow a story.
It also stops us trying to figure out what someone has just said, particularly when you have an actor that slurs and drawls their words.
We are disappointed when we get a dvd and find it does not have them, it usually means that we have to have the volume up louder than we would normally like, and disturbs the kids who are sleeping.
hmm we need more ppl voting...argh..!

Because you want subtitles? They are something that a lot of people do not use, and many people hate. I have seen many players in the past that defaulted to subtitles on and it was a massive cause of complaints. Your best hope is if this player becomes popular in Europe, subtitles are much more popular there due to the amount of different nationalities that are within the same DVD zones. If they get onto this then there is a good chance that a firmware update will happen, with our limited population we don't represent enough business to most companies to warrant the effort.

subs are not an issue for me,but a new firmware update might add a few more features so bring it on.
THe poll is missing the vital choice- Would you consider buying this unit even though it has no subtitle supportSorry I meant to have that option, but forgot. Can't fix it now. I guess that is +1 for I would buy the 676 anyhow? :)

Found out yesterday that the 676A I ordered was in the warehouse, but not leaving yet because they were carrying out firmware updates on those in stock. I don't know if this is an update to provide subtitle support. I guess I will know when I get mine - suppose to be next week.

hmm i thought u had the 676A already? let us know what firmware version your at when u do get it and if u have subtitle support.
reports over at the DivX forums suggest that the 676A can be flashed with the 575 firmware. well 1 guy said he did it successfully. i'll give it possibly 1 more week to see if an official 676A firmware comes out, else i'll probably go with the 575 firmware.
oh as for firmware versions..right now im at 2.05. previous versions were 1.44 and a few others..these were for both 676 and 575.
the new subtitle enabled firmware is 2.09

I guess you have seen this, but a guy in Thailand gave it a go, and it worked:
http://www.entguy.com/v1/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=1899&forum=20&post_id=12188
and there are these threads on the 575 subtitle-supporting v2.0.9 firmware (many of these are not in english - google translation helps):

Disclaimer: if anyone tries the 575 firmware on their 676 and it dies, don't blame me! :)

To find the firmware version:
HOME MENU
INITIAL SETTINGS
go down to OPTIONS (do not enter sub menu)
press the "DISPLAY" button on the remote
i haven't tried the 575 firmware yet on mine. haven't been bothered yet as such. and yes a little scared.
what firmware version is urs?
what firmware version is urs?I have 2.05 also. With the correlation between the 575 and 676 firmware number, I think your assumption that they use the same firmware is probably true. Since a few people OS have tried the 575 firmware in the 676 sucessfully, I guess it should be safe. But who wants to try? :/

hehe since u just got ur unit not long ago, i think u should try it, as ur not attached to it yet!
Just to let u all know that the 575 firmware works for the 676a. Stupid pioneer guy - this is what they wrote to me:
"There is no firmware upgrade for this player to enable DivX subtitles. Also this is not a software upgrade, but hardware only. "
Anyway i flashed the firmware tonight, and all is good..divx subtitles! all looks good to me.
i d/led the firmware from:
http://www.geocities.com/pioneer_575/Pioneer-575-B4BA2096.zip
Just label upgrade CDR/RW disc PIONEER, press PLAY when asked on screen and wait until tray open and Pioneer logo shows on screen !!!
Update instructions
1. Turn on the player, and open the disc tray
2. Put the Software Update Disc on the tray, and close the tray
3. A screen will be displayed inviting you to push the "play" button to start the update
4. The player will load the data, and the tray will open again. It is safe to remove the Software Update Disc from the tray now. Leave the tray open.
5. Wait until the update process finishes (nothing will move on the screen durnig the update) and the Pioneer logo is shown on the screen. The update process will complete in less than 5 minutes.
"That's a very brave move Prime Minister"
Seriously though, well done, all it needs is one brave person to try these things.

Let's hope Pioneer Australia will make it official like they should - to make the Pioneer 676A actually compliant with one of the requirements for the Divx logo - that the player be able to display subtitles for Divx files.
(I have written more about this in the thread started by a representative from DivX: http://forums.eyo.com.au/showthread.php?p=752898#post752898)
Does the Pioneer 676A still think it is a 676A after the upgrade? Does SCART show up under "Video Output" in the Initial Settings?
has no-one else tried the hack?
I just bought the 676A about 20minutes ago.. its good so far! Well.. except for the fact that i can't get 5.1 output working..
In fact, is there the original firmware to download incase the hack doesn't work well?
I have got an email back from Pioneer.
I have been asked to pass this on:
Our engineering division has asked me which languages our market would like to have support for in DivX titles.
Is its the same situation as with Pioneer Europe:
Only the ISO 8859-1 (also known as "Latin 1") font set is supported for displaying subtitle text, covering the following languages: Albanian, Basque, Catalan, Danish, Dutch, English, Faroese, Finnish, French, German, Icelandic, Irish, Italian, Norwegian, Portuguese, Rhaeto-Romanic, Scottish, Spanish, and Swedish.
Please advise if you have some time.
I appreciate your support and feedback. So do we care about any languages other than the above? Are any languages that aren't included that would be useful?
Another interesting thing is that I was told that updating the firmware on the 676 would reset the player to be Region 4 only! Updating of the firmware and keeping Multi-zone will require returning your player to Pioneer for the update.
Argh: have you tried using a non-Region 4 disc since you updated your firmware? Did it work?

Just tried it just then - it (other regions) works fine - except stupid macrovision protection thing is annoying me.
Seems like Pioneer Aus don't know that much at all.....
