Ok, I've been playing this game for a few days now, and it's a sweet game, only problem is that sometimes for no reason, the voices drop out on cut scenes, or when I'm talking to a charactor in the bar, or when they talk to me in my ship.

It's really p!ssing me off, because I think that I'm missing parts of the story. Has anyone else playing this game found the same problems, and if you have, did you manage to fix it??

I would of thought microsoft would dof fixed it with a patch by now, but there is no sign of one :( :(

hey linton, people playing No one lives forver 2 have been having similar problems. Somone worked out that if u have extra video codecs installed they can effect sounds in games....dont ask why.

Worst case senario deleted any extra video coded packs you've installed like Nimo etc.

hope it helps

Yep, onboard 5.1. Nforce chipset.

The sound drivers are all upto date, I ran windows update to get the latest drivers.
Also got directX 9.0a at the same time.

I've played and finished No one lives forever 2, didn't have any sound troubles the whole way through.

I did have nimo codec pack installed, But It's not on there anymore.
Sort of came about in a roundabout kind of way. I ended up catching a stupid worm virus that I couldn't get rid of, and it was slowly infecting everything, bit by bit, so I went and re-formated.
I'm about to install freelancer again, on pretty much a clean slate with all newest drivers and directX and SP1, will see how it goes.

Ok, I tried to post a reply when the whole I can't post using the forums.eyo.com.au thing was going on, and since hen I forgot about it.

It seems the problem was the Mp3 codecs that the Nimo codec pack installed, and since I did a little research, a clean install (for other resons), and havn't installed the nimo codecs since (using the kazaalite codec pack now), I havn't had a single problem.

I have however moved onto playing C&C Generals, and freelancer is just sitting there taking up 1gig+ on the hard drive. The single player missions novilty sort of wore off, and me without asdl, I'm not going to even attempt to play it online. There would be just too much for my poor 56k to handle.

Thanks to everyone for their help.

Hi there

Microsoft has posted a Knowledge Base Article acknowledging sound issues. Article number is 814549.

URL: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;814549.

Another option is to forget about Fraunhofer MP3 codec and try KAZAA codec.

URL: http://doa2.host.sk/index.htm

Still don't know for sure if this works 100%. If you figure out a perfect solution, plz let me know.

Thanks

Pete

I did end up finding a solution, I just installed freelancer again without the nimo or kazaa codec packs installed. I just use the codecs I need now, ie. Divx 3.02, Divx 4, divx 5, and Xvid.

So i have my old celeron 366 MHz and the game works on it. Im using old Windows98 (almost all in my computer is old anyway).
I have SondblasterLive 5.1 soundcard.

I had problems with speech in Freelancer too. Tried to do what they say in readmy.rtf (coldnt make heads and tails out of it...). Tried several forums. Reinstall game for several times. All for absolutely NOTHING. I was so frustrated to even reinstall my system. So i formatted my hard drive. Installed Win98 WITHOUT any codec. And then installed Frunhoffer Codecs only. The sound worked perfectly until... Yep i was so stupid to install some old windows media player... And guess what happened. Sound was screwed up again. Just my luck I suppose. I thought that all have to start again from nothing... From readme.rtf i finally managed to get my own sound solution. So here it is:

IMPORTANT NOTE!!! : ONLY TESTED ON WINDOWS 98

1. Install Frunhoffer Codec
2. Set Priority of your new Fraunhoffer Codec to 1
2. Extract the file l3codeca.acm from WMFDIST.EXE using WINRAR
3. Go to C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory and overwrite the l3codeca.acm (I couldnt find it in WINDOWS\SYSTEM32...)
4. Look for system.ini file in C:\WINDOWS\ directory and open it with notepad.
5.Look for the line starting with "msacm.l3acm=" and replace anything that is there with "msacm.l3acm=l3codeca.acm"
6. Restart your system.

Now sound works perfectly. At least on my computer. Hope this sollution will help somebody...

I partially used the advice from the previous post.

Step 1. Uninstall any 3rd party codec packs
Step 2. Go to C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 directory and delete the l3codeca.acm and/or the l3codecp.acm (The beginning of that file name is a lower case L not an upper case i.)
Step 3. Extract the file l3codeca.acm from WMFDIST.EXE using WINRAR
Step 4. Copy and paste the new l3codeca.acm into your SYSTEM32 directory

All of those steps must be done while your game is turned off.

Once that file is pasted into the directory you can start your game, no need to reboot.

I can't guarantee this will work for everyone but it did work for me.

Thanks for the help Hitokiri
