Harris Scarfes are selling the RCA 23W23EA 76" widescreen for $569 - pretty cheap. An earlier thread (Dec 2003) reckoned these were a good set for the money - then about $800.
Sure technologies moved quickly since then, but at this price may be worth getting one. Question is are those who purchased one (back in 2003) still happy with it? What's its reliability like?
Thanks

Well, typical American reliability I suppose... not as good as the Jap.

Considering they are probably made in China the first statement is crap.
And sony would have to be one of the most unreliable TVs ever made.

I'd rather take a Sony built in China over an RCA or Teac or Konka (etc)
built in China

Actually they're made in Poland, but who knows where the components come from. Thomson (parent company) who are originally French used to make some reputable gear. Good thing is this is not a 'rebadged' no-name brand as I believe most of the Teac stuff is. Thomson (or RCA) manufacture there own gear. I think Thomson may even make there own tubes.

geez,
would really like some answers on this, this looks too cheap to pass up as a
bedroom TV.
are there any other 76cm widescreens in this price range??

I purchased the TV yesterday and I am actually quite impressed. Funny thing is that on the way home another guy with a station wagon in front of me at the lights had the same box in the back of his station wagon - they must be going fast!
I looked at these TVs a couple of years ago when they were black (wish they still were), and I think around $ 2000. As far as I can tell, apart from the colour they haven't changed much. I have a feeling they were manufactured in France back then. Now they are manufactured in Poland to get the price so low I expect (perhaps black plastic is expensive too ;-).
Anyway I set it up - very easy. Interestingly the menus are arranged very elegantly and similarly to a $3000 Loewe I used to have (that set died on me so shows that even the expensive brands have problems). Probably a European 'standard'.
I also received an email from a TV technician whom I asked about these TVs - he said he thought these sets, though basic for a widescreen, were quite reliable and more sophisticated than the Chinese brands.
BTW: You need to buy it on a Harris Scafes card to get it at $569. Bonus is that they give you an extra years warranty for doing this as well!
If HS are out of them, you could always try to get someone else to pricematch.

I picked one up to day from Clive Peters in Ringwood for $558 with 5 year extended warranty (normal price is $499 with 1 year wattanty) I am happy with that.
