View Full Version : Flat Screen LCD TV that works in Aus and UK?

I've been trying to find a flat screen tv that works in both the UK and
Australia. I'd like to avoid a solution which requires relying on tuning
through another source, like a vcr.

When I've looked at particular models and ask this in shops, the typical
response is often (and unsettlingly) "Uh, yeah, uh, sure, it'll do that",
which hardly inspires confidence. Can anyone out there recommend a
brand/product line that does this. In an ideal world, I'd find something
that I could also use in North America, but that's probably hoping for too
much.
Am looking for this as we live in the UK, will move to Australia definitely
and Canada possibly, so would be nice to find something that is able to work
in all these countries!
Thanks,
Gus

Personally, I wouldn't bother. The amount of shipping costs involved
would probably be way too expensive. Then you have the issue of support:
what happens if it gets damaged in transit?

IMHO, source locally when you get to your chosen destination.

Clem,

Actually when we ship it will be in a volume container, so a flat screen
won't cost any more. Might also be paid (and insured) by company. Over the
years I've bought something like 7 tv's and the longest I've owned one is 2
and a half years - due to moving between countries (and, therefore different
broadcast stds). While I know flat screens have a shorter life than a
traditional telly, it would be nice to get something I could hang on to for
somewhere near its normal life!
That's why I'm looking for something like a "world" model - for want of a
better term - that I could get serviced in the UK or Australia.

Most LCD tvs have a multi system tuner eg Pal/secam NTSC. This would cover
the Whole world.

If you come to Australia you will probably purchase a "digital" set top box
anyhow. Because all the LCDs (sold here) have analogue tuners. Once you have
watched digital you don't want to watch analogue.

Over here digital freeview has shit picture quality, if you find high video
compression acceptable you need a pair of spectacles. Analogue TV with good
reception is far better than digital freeview (at least in the UK)

I guess it could just the projector then. Not good enough (has analogue and
digital terrestrial TV) CRT projector well setup.

So you think digital freeview TV has better picture quality then???

in my case, yes. YMMV, but if digital TV *was* worse than analogue, then
no-one would buy it!

what are you going to do when they switch analogue off?

Did I say I own CRT projector? No. I've seen analogue + digital going on
the CRT projector.

Thanks for adding so much of your knowledge to answering the original
question. Nothing like a hissy fit to really show what level you operate
on. You're now both logged into my usenet kill file so I won't have to

That's as maybe but in Australia just as in the US they have Over The Air High
Definition TV. I've not seen the Australian version of OTA HiDef but the US
version is stunning & far better than analogue even PAL or SECAM.

Gus,
Sharp LCD TVs support PAL/NTSC/SECAM

Here in Australia most big (>32 inches) models are 220 Volts only.
As for warranty, the only 'world warranty' is on portable TVs, mostly
battery operated.

Shipping is not much of a concern; For a 37', 30 kg model, shipping by
air to UK with insurance costs AUD $200 if picked up at the airport.
Shipping right to the customer door is at least 3 times more expensive.
I expect the reverse is about the same.

However, if you have owned the V for less than a year before shipping,
you will have to pay:
- import duty of 5%
- GST (goods&services tax) of 10%

It all depends when you will depart the UK, and of the price
differential between Australia and the UK.

Since we had orders from the UK, I imagine LCD TVs cost more over there,
even with shipping!
So you might want to sell it there and buy anew in Australia.
