Care to share your experiences with this machine ?. I'm thinking of getting
one of these over the Sony which seems to have a huge design problem with
the >2hr non divide ability. See www.avforums.com .Also the Pioneer have a
3yr warranty which is good as I'm a little wary of reliability of the HD's
in them.

I have just taken delivery of 3 of the 720H.(7 out of 10 or 7/10) It adds to
4 Sharps HR-300 80gigs(9/10) 6 LG vhs to either +R or -R) (7/10) 2 Philips
(7/10) 5 Panasonics various models all but he first model (E-20) get 10/10
whilst the E-20 gets 6/10, 1 Digitrex (1/10) 1 Samsung HD only model
(1/10).
As you can see I have a fair range. For best performance, I can't go past
the Panasonics. Their menu system is by far the best to access and use
although the titling is messy but they all are. Their variable recording
time is an excellent feature and will continue to persuade me to continue
buying the Panas over the others.
The Sharps come second to the Panas with the Pioneer 3rd The LGs were only
purchased because we do so much vhs to DVD stuff and appear to do that quite
well.
I find the Pioneers are confusing but the 160 gig is great and even better
is the DV in AND out feature of these units. I am now mastering all our work
onto these units as if changes are needed we can feed it back via firewire
(lossless) into the Avid for alterations. maybe a bit more time
familiarising myself with them I may increase the rating.
The Phillips works well +R only but navigation is also a heap confusing.
The biggest lemon is the Samsung (HD record only) as it keeps recording
automatically over and over without being told to. Something to do with
"Never miss a programme again" philosophy they promoted at the time. Not far
behind is the Digitrex which was purely purchased to try the +R format with
some players not reading -R.
My choice stands at the moment Panasonic by a country dunny.

I have a Pioneer 510 here that I am more than happy with. (apart from hard
drive size)
Its VERY user friendly, and the only thing I would say its missing is the
digital tuner (which none of them have) and RGB IN. (which apparently the
SONY has)
Hope this helps.

G'day
I have the Pioneer DVR-720, only had it for a few weeks, so far I'm very
happy with it. It's easy to use, and editing video (i.e - getting rid of
ads) is simple and straight forward. If I had to grumble I'd prefer a
text listing of the HDD's contents; much like the Disc navigator screen,
instead of the thumbnail view, if you've set "Navi-Marks" for the
thumbnails it can be a bit slow in displaying them. The unit might have
a text listing but I haven't found it - I'm yet to refer to the manual,
the unit is that easy to use.
DAVO - what did you find confusing about the Pioneers? I have nothing to
compare my unit to because it's the only recorder of it's type that I've
used. How does it differ tothe Panasonics? Also I'd be interested in
hearing about your thoughts on the Sharp HR-300, you gave it 9.10?? I
posted a request for opinions on the Sharp when I was shopping around,
but didn't get any replies.
Gary S
Does the 720 save chapter mark when recording to the HDD now? 510H doesnt.

I was going to by the Pioneer recorder until the last minutes I decide to
put my money on the Panasonic PT-AE700 projector and a projector
screen, so the recorder has to wait...

It does when recording in "Video" mode (chapters every 10 minutes or 15
minutes), but not in "VR" mode. I'm not 100% up on what "Video" and
"VR" mode is - I haven't read the manual yet, apart from looking up the
answer to your question. But I think it records to the HDD in "VR" mode,
so I guess the answer is no :o) Does the 510H save chapter marks when
recording in "Video" mode?
I really haven't looked into the depths of the machine yet - I've only
used it to record from my set top box, and to record from some VHS tapes
I had laying around. I've only burned on DVD, and that was only to see
how it works. I doubt I'll ever use that part of the machine, I only
wanted it to time shift TV shows - and it does that well, beats me how I
did without it - no hassle looking for a blank video to record
something, just press record - love it.
Gary S
P.S - I started to record everything in Fine mode (34 hours max
recording on the 720), but have settled on SP mode (68 hours max
recording) because I can hardly tell the difference in the quality of
the recordings - what do other users record in?
No the 510 only records chapters when writing to a DVD, it wont do chapters
in either mode in the HDD.

You can manually insert your chapters on playback.
that's how I edit and delete ads etc.

Why woudl you want to add chapters for general viewing ? Actually I have
no idea why you would want to add "fixed" (ie every "X" minutes) chapters
anyway.
