I'm on the verge of buying a digital video recorder and so far I've had
trouble finding any specific information on compatibility with a SD set top
box.
Are DVR's capable of recording from a STB and later playback in 16:9
widescreen mode?

Also, from a look at the Pioneer DVR-520 (this is my most likely buy) I see
that it does not have component video inputs to take the output from my STB.
It looks like I will need to connect in S video and then output from the DVR
in component. Do any of the DVR's have component input connections?

I suspect that with a standard definition STB there is little to be lost by
going to S video connections, however in the future I plan to upgrade to a
HD box and I would like to stay with component connections.

Any info is appreciated

I have my Pioneer 510 connected to my SD box via s-video and the picture
quality is pretty good.
If you want RGB in, I think the SONY has it.
The Pioneer records 16:9 no problems.
You are correct in assuming you lose very little pq by going s-video.
None of the current DVD recorders are capable of accepting 1080i in.

By DVR I assume you meant a DVD recorder? The panasonic E85H (with hard disk) accepts RGB, and outputs component. It has no problem with a WS image, as long as the device it's recording from is set to WS.
