I have the following:

142cm rear projection Panasonic TV
Panasonic DVD Recorder
Foxtel Digital STU
DGTEC HD STU
5 DOSS Speakers and Subwoofer.

I am new to this Home Theatre revolution.I presume I need some rype of AV
Receiver to run this setup. What receiver should I purchase to run this
system to its best performance ?

It really would depend on how much your prepared to spend, and what standard
of 5.1 you want, quality wise.

You can pick up a Chinese made Sansui 5.1 Tuner/receiver for a couple of
hundred dollars, From Strathfield Radio, that you might consider adequate
to drive your speakers,

Or you could spend many thousands of dollars, on a Pre amp // power amp
combination.

Your speakers are unknown to me, so I can,t comment, But if there small
satellite speakers, they will sound lousy, whatever the amplification,
sorry.

If those DOSS speakers are some really cheapo ones, then you need this:

No he's spoken the word, Sony. So now we know there crap.

There is some really good quality stuff on the market these days, IF your
prepared to spend the money, If your in a main Town, City, there are
dedicated retail outlets for such gear, Sydney, would have Audio Connection,
a vast Aladdin's cave of goodies, both new and traded, Campsie Hi-Fi, Hi-Fi
Junction at Bondi, You really don,t need to spend mega dollars.
Just stay away from Hardly Normal, or Retrovision. etc. They all have
these poxy little sound rooms, they turn the volume right up, and then tell
you how wonderful it sounds, Get them to turn the sound right down,
disconnect the Base Sub, and see what the reaction is.
and if you really want to get up there nose , take along a CD Audio test
disk. Any reputable sound retailer will offer a selection of test C.D's.
and leave you in an easy chair with a cup of coffee

I think this guy wants a serious receiver guys! I bought a 2nd hand Luxman
7.1 130 watts RMS each channel amp off Ebay for $550.00 and I have excellent
speakers complete digital surround sound and it blows me away every time!
The performance is totally awesome. I know the guy that sells them on Ebay
has more of them! If pressed I could find his Ebay ID for you. Don't go for
the 5.1 or 6.1 rubbish! More and more movies are coming out in 7.1 format!

Cheers,
Col

Dolby Digital ES and DTS EX are all six channel format, 7.1 is a
manufacturer's gimmick
I have Pioneer AX5i which has 7.1 but there aren't many software of either
DD ES or DTS EX.

Ideliverit does sound more than just a bit like a sales person promoting his own Ebay line, does he not?

I dunno about 7.1, The cost of a half decent Power Amp, for 5.1
is in excess of 10K, So I just stick with good Stereo.

Cost of half decent power amp does not cost more than 10K unless
you are after slightly high end stuff. Half decent brand are the likes of
Rotels or Nad and they certainly don't cost more than 10K.

Hmmm..
1 centre front speaker +
1 left front centre speaker +
1 right front centre speaker +
1 left rear speaker +
1 right rear speaker +
1 centre rear speaker +
1 subwoofer

No matter which way you look at it. It always adds up to 7!!!! Hence 7.1
exists!! I would love to hear your opinions on this simple arithmetic?

Rotel High End? You are kidding, right?

It is OK in the cheap gear class, but certainly not in the league with brands
like Pioneer, Sansui, Yamaha etc. Pay a little more and get good gear if you
have (or are going to get at some time) speakers that will show the difference
- but if you are only running cheapy speakers then it probably wont matter much
as they will be the limiting factor.

Not a good idea at all - take along a couple of your own CDs, ones that you are
familiar with, and preferably ones which focus on different aspects of music
and voice.

Then listen. Always an AB test on the speakers that seem to be best when you
have narrowned the selection down. Back and forth, on vocals, on the
instrumental style you fancy, use organ and drums to check how they handle
bass. Make sure it is you that adjusts the bass and treble, not the salesman.
Make sure that the same amp is used on all the speakers you seriousely
consider.

AND LAST AND MOST IMPORTANT - if you are buying good gear make your final
selection in your house, not the stores showroom. Any fair dinkum store will
be happy to arrange that..

No, I don't consider Rotel as high end, to me
the high end brands are brands like Lexicon, Tag
McLaren, Krell, Classe, parasound and Mcintosh.
Rotel is still a mass market brand and it is not a
high end brand, for 5K you can certainly get Rotel
multi channel power amps.

If that is the way you are counting then even 9.1 exist, just look at some
of the Yamaha receivers. I have heard disc which has DTS-ES sound
track and it is only 6.1 and show me a movie which has 7.1 sound track.
Simply the number of speakers in your room or number of speakers your
amp can accomodate does not mean the actual recorded sound track is
recorded in 7 channels. You can enjoy 6 channels stereo with normal cd
using the av amps but the music you are playing is still recorded in 2
channel stereo.

Good solid sound advice David,, I always go armed with some Piano
Music C.D.'s and if they don't like it, fine, I can go elsewhere, but there
stuck in one place.

All depends if you are talking about digital surround or Pro Logic surround.
I understand where you are coming from John. However, people need to know
the difference between digital and pro-logic. digital is the complete
separation of channels. Hence the 5.1 saga. However, pro-logic is the
separation of frequencies. Then, you have ES format which, I believe is
digital + prologic that gives you 5 separate channels + a break up of the
frequencies for front and rear centre.
