Dunno about you you, but I'd rather answer a stupid question than fix
a stupid mistake.

Very little myself except jumper leads, never been used on my car but I've
helped a few people out.
My husband and son has all those things others have mentioned - I have RACV
I'd also suggest a pair of full overalls (keep clothes clean)
A large empty milk container for fuel or water
Simple first aid kit or just some bandaids & those moist cloths for cleaning
up

I keep a socket set in my car because the wheel brace that came with it broke.
There's also a screwdriver in the manufacturer provided one piece tool kit.
That's for getting the wheel nut covers off.

I made up some handy charts years ago and we put them up on our site.
Go here to download 'em:
http://home.connexus.net.au/~linford/mecharts.html
BTW 16.0 mm / 25.4 is a bees dick off 0.63" close to 5/8" which is
exactly 0.625" so I figure you must be mistaken as to what the 16 mm
would fit.

I agree. I've had ratchet handles snap and sockets crack on those cheap and
nasty ones from Super Cheap Auto. I'll be spending the extra $$$ and getting
myself some Sidchrome ones for Christmas.

What are the most valuable/useful tools to have for maintaining/repairing
your car? I want to get a kit together.
What do you keep in your car?
What do you have in your garage?

Set of combination metric ring/open enders, say 8mm - 19mm
except 15, 17 & 18. - good enough to last without costing a fortune - eg:
Kincrome, Repco, Fuller
#2 & #3 Phillips + similar size flat blade screwdrivers, one big flat
blade & an electronics size flat & Phillips - either buy something good
you like the feel of or get the h/w shop Stanley box set & pick out those
you'll use.
Dollar shop for the leccy size ones.
Decent jack & w/brace that works (already said that)
Plug spanner the right size.
Ratchet socket handle, uni joint, 15-20cm extension
Socket set once you decide to carry on with it - decent one
Insulated combination pliers
Medium pair ViseGrips (optional but can be v.useful)
Cheap torch with a battery that works
Notebook & pen for jotting down what things came from where (wires, bolts
etc)
Whole heap more but that really should get you going.
Cheers

Hey liz
> What are the most valuable/useful tools to have for maintaining/repairing

I would say some screwdrivers, spanners, torch, rope, and jack and brace for
changing tyres. Also a rain coat. Should be a heap more but that is the
basics in my car.
> What do you keep in your car?
A spare roll of toilet paper, (you never know where or when you need it )
note paper, pens and a thick black texta.
> What do you have in your garage?
Large amount of junk, lawnmower and not much else.
To be honest, Not enough toys, (but we've no money to buy any either)
but dad has enough to make up for our lacking.
If he carn't help or doesn't have it then the mechanic we go to does. (btw
he doesn't rip females off, he is one of the honest ones)
Or we go to our other mechanic. (we have two cars and two mechanic's, one
for each car)
We have generally been pretty lucky with running our cars and not having to
spend a huge forturne in them and I hope it doesn't change.
Nic
whom really needs power steering installed into the second car (toyota) so I
can drive that car instead as the expensive car (mazda 6) is giving me bad
luck. Up prang/scratch/dent number 10 now in 18 months. (after no
dints/accidents in almost five years)

you're working on A/F stuff) duuuh. Cheers
