The VT's and VX's i've driven around are harsh and rough. Engines have
this unsettling metallic noise when started, and when revved just
don't sound very well.

But YES! they are gutsy engines, no doubts there, but compared to
magnas and co, they are no where near as refined.

Neither is the Falcon 6, which you conveniently forgot to mention.

The I6 isn't perfect, but still are more refined than the 3800.

Look honestly, the 3800's are alright, they've got power, they're old,
tried and true. But they're a harsh and unrefined motor, and they last
for a while. aside from that.

Only major issues i've heard with them is the timing chains tend to
stretch, and the Series 1 VN motors had an issue with the rear main
seal

Obviously the new V6 alloytec, isn't all that its cracked up to be.

I pay more attention to autospeeds reviews than anyone elses, find
them probably the least biased of any.

Driven a VX or VY have you?

They're only "harsh" if you're trying to cane the crap out of them, and
operate them at an RPM that doesn't do anything other than make noise.

The timing chains don't stretch any more than any other cam in block engine
that runs such a system, and their rear main seal woes are no better or
worse than anything else.

If you wish to see timing chain stretch at it's finest, look at a Magna or
Falcon engine :)

Really? How do you know?

Oh...

Pffftt :)

YEs i've driven a VX, and thought it was very harsh.

In regards to the timing chain issue, i've seen, heard and read
otherwise, with the older motors that was the issue. The rear main
seal was a problem with the series 1 VN's.

As for the alloytec, Awesome automotive comments is enough. Leon there
has been working on 3800 motors for a while, i'm sure he knows more
about the matter than either you or I.

Compared to a BMW V12, you're probably right.....

As it was with Ford, Toyota, Mazda, Nissan and just about every other type
of cheap, mass produced engines.

I've had two brand new Ford Falcons, and both had leaking rear mains and
converter seals before they'd hit 5000km.
