Hi all
Heard a lot of good things about this player.
What's the cheapest price people have found it for in Melbourne?
And is it available in black or silver only?
thanks

I'm about to go and get one from Harvey Norman if they have one. I think
Trev Lees has them for $215.
i want to know if they are region free?

Got trade price on mine, but $215 is good. RRP is $249 I think.

Yup.
Bought one 2 days ago, very nice unit. Worth every penny. It even plays
some divx files on DVD's that none of my PC's will even read properly.
Silver only too, sorry.

What chipset is the Pioneer unit based on? Is it the same as the Phillips?
Does it have issues with QPL and GMC when playing back xvid files? Any info
would be appreciated. Im currently investigating one of these :
http://www.airlinktek.com/english/prod_mg25.htm
As a alternative. Plus it doubles as a portable hdd. Anyone seen one of
these in action? They go for about $180-200 without hdd.

We have just got some in at work, I will be trialing them this week
hopefully. There seem to be 3 or 4 companies importing these so far, I
reakon they will kill off the portable MP3 player market eventually. I
will also be comparing it against the 676a;-)

Which companies are distributing them? I know of ANywhere computers in Melb.
They are mentioned on the Airlinktek website as the only one in AU. Who else
brings them in? Just trying to find if any other distributors are doing
better prices than Anywhere, as i find them to be a bit expensive at times.

Ah, I see. You won't beat that price. We resell for $199. I will try one
once the novelty of putting 12 tv shows on 1 dvd wears off, on the 676a;-).

I have seen the EURO version of this has a firmware update related to
DivX. I just thought you all might be interested.
Here is a bit off the Pioneer site.
"
Free firmware update for DV-470 / DV-575A DVD players
Melsele, 2 November 2004
Free firmware update for European DV-470 / DV-575A DVD players
Pioneer has decided to integrate in the European DV-470 / DV-575A DVD
players support for playback of external subtitle files linked to DivX
files, in as far as these are relying on the ISO 8859-1 font set (more
details can be found below).
This requires an update of the player's internal system control
software ("firmware"), which can be done by the end-user using a
free-of-charge Software Update Disc. The disc will be sent to you on
simple request.
This update is optional, and users who do not need the described
functionality can continue using their player as is. "

Hello,
I have been contemplating a DIVX capable DVD player for some time now,
especially as some of the "cheap" ( read Chinese ) brands have been
really cheap .
I wonder though if it's worthwhile.
DVD burners are much cheaper these days so anything Divx ( or Xvid for
that matter ) I have or will have can be readily made into some format
that burns and runs on a normal DVD player.
Is there something I am missing or has the price drop in burners caught
the standalone Divx player up ?
That is to say, whats the advantage of a Divx player if I can make DVDs
from Divx files ?
Regards
Stuart
Id say simply the lack of having to convert them. PLus converting them can
be a pain, especially when aspect ratios, lip synch is concern. Id much
prefer to keep files in their native divx/xvid format and play them, plus
can archive them easily. I persaonly use an xbox atm, but can forsee that i
will prob get a divx standalone player at some point.

I have had problems converting DivX files to DVD format, but with the 676A
there is no need to convert, besides you can fit 5 or 6 movies onto a single
DVD single layer disk.

You can get considerably more material on a DVD-R in MPEG-4 (which is
what DivX and XviD implement) than you can in MPEG-2 (which is what
DVD uses). A 2-hour movie can be squeezed down to 700MB as MPEG-4,
while the same thing typically takes 4+GB as MPEG-2 -- though this
all depends on the bitrates used.
Plus, the transcode from MPEG-4 to MPEG-2 to put it on a regular DVD
is prone to complication. You can get A/V sync problems, and re-encoding
a lossily-compressed file with another lossy compressor further reduces
the quality.
I own a Zensonic Z300, and I'm wishing I'd know this Pioneer unit was
coming along as I'd have gone for that instead -- I don't need SACD or
the like just yet, but it would've lasted longer as a useful device.
At this point, unless you're expecting to get lots of stuff in DivX format
I'd suggest holding off until you're ready to replace your current player.
Then pick one that does DivX along with everything else you want -- in
the not-too-distant future it's going to be a pretty standard feature even
on the big-name units.
