How the hell do I ground these things?
After changing powerboards, powerpoints and bypassing the amplifier altogether they still die after just a few uses!!!
After talking to Strathfield they gave a me a different model...a XMS-9550 but after connecting that to a seperate powerpoint from the tv there is still an electrical 'zap' feeling when touching the top of the unit
I'm afraid to turn it on right now, does anyone know why this is happening and how I can fix it? No other devices have had any problems on any power source in my house
I see i'm not the only one :(

Definately sounds like you have something weird going on there, not sure what to suggest but you certainly shouldn't be getting zapped, sounds like some sort of earth leakage issue, perhaps someone on here with some electrical background might be able to advise what is happening.

Thanks for the quick reply.
I was a bit suspicious about the VCR connected to the tv on AV2.
I unhooked that and couldn't feel any noticable zapping sensations after going over the divx player.
I turned it on and it seems fine.
Hopefully I won't have to pay another visit to Brisbane car sound (Strathfield) in the CBD ;)

Your new one is not a DivX player (assuming you have posted the correct model number), not sure if you were after that functionality, I'm guessing you were though as you referred to it as a DivX player just now. Interesting that the other user that had all the power supply issues from the link you provided was also up your way (although it was 7 months ago and would have been the earlier version of the 888). How has the weather been recently? I have seen things suffer when there are power surges going on, which can sometimes cause power spikes that can play havoc with some devices, too many air conditioners running etc. These power spikes are sometimes a problem in S.A. they seem to suffer it more than other states. If you were after the Mpeg4 functionality maybe you should have asked them to change it for a Zensonic Z330 instead, just a thought.

Well funny you mention that, I just tried a few discs and it said 'unkown disc' *sigh* I asked them if it was a divx player before I swapped it, they said yes and it says compatible with mpeg4 on the box....i'm assuming that is compatible with divx format?

Does sound like a mixup has happened, you will know why when you see the 989, it looks the same as the one you have. Easy mistake I guess but annoying none the less. I'm sure they will be eager to help you out when they realise their mistake.

Yeah, that they've been caught giving him the wrong 2nd hand returned unit ... buy the Pioneer 676a (http://www.pioneeraus.com.au/home_entertainment/dvdplayersandrecorders/dv676a/) and tell Strathfield to jam it!

The guy could have an earth leakage problem, will your advice to tell them to jam it and buy something else prevent him being electrocuted? I'm not sure I follow your logic.

I've already asked for a refund to buy the philips one instead. But they said they can only replace it or send it in for repairs.

Have you had a look at the Zensonic Z330? swapping to one of those would be a better option if they are only willing to exchange.
Sounds like an earth leakage problem to me as well.
I have seen large sparks before when hooking up a TV aerial to a PC (aerial also hooked up to VCR and TV).
It is basically due to the fact that the TV and VCR have two wire (non earthed) plugs, and the PC was earthed.
Simply, the TV and VCR not having a 'real' earth connection have a sort of 'fake' earth, (IE what they consider to be earth). When the cables are connected to a device that has a 'real' earth connection, you will quite often feel anything from nothing, to a noticeable tingle or in my case some nasty looking sparks.

It mightn't ... but I was addressing Strathfield's shabby service ... maybe you should too.

Grounded equipment with fake earth (i.e grounded thru neutral) has an inherit problem, electrical feedback, electricity will always follow the path of least resistance and that can mean thru cables that interconnect systems were some equipment has either a true earth or in the case of large conductive casing (metal) thru a nicely conductive human who happens to touch the casing, most of the time people don't realise the potential of getting a minor zap from equipment as most domestic gear has plastic casing, PC's and most dvd players have 'grounded' metal housings and this can lead to irritating electrical discharge. This feedback is also the hum you will get from cheap equipment when audio gear is near or attached to it.

I am on my third 888.
The first one, the tray wouldn't open and the second - one trip back to Strathfield.
Seond one - I turned it on and got a huge spark fly out the back of it and it died - second trip to Stathfield.
This one (third one) seems to be working ok now.
I am impressed by the actual performance of the unit - the only thing I would of liked is a built in DTS decoder since I don't have an external amp yet.
I have learn't the value of keeping reciepts !
Now my third 888 is dead - I now have a z330 and must say am pretty impressed so far......
