Reading people's various quetions about debt etc, I was wondering....can you get sent to Gaol for
not paying a debt?

No but you can get sent to jail for not obeying a court order to pay.
Same only different, eh? There are no debtor's prisons any more.

With respect, that's not entirely true unless fraud or some other unlawful
act is involved.

nope. it is not a crime to owe money.

however it is a crime to incure debt when you know you cant pay it. such as
writing a cheque when you know there is no money in your account. or
signing up for credit or any kind while your a non discharged bankrupt.

Normally only for a debt to the govt now like a fine imposed by a court.

You cannot be sent to goal for not paying a debt if you have no means of
paying it.........

Even if you *can* pay the debt - it is still not gaolable. The creditor can only apply to the
court to forcibly "take goods to the value" or garnishee wages - but no gaol - unless you block
the doorway with a shottie. :)
