When I put in a dvd of a movie (original dvd), I get the picture filling the tv screen with no letter box view with the xms 888
I know this is not right, as my standard dvd player will show it in wide screen, letterbox format.
Is there a setting where the xmx888 will automatically play the dvd in widescreen?

Go into setup, and set the TV display type (under General) to 'Normal/LB'
picture here, http://ausdivx.ms11.net/xms888/05tvdisplay.JPG although in the picture 'wide' is selected for a widescreen tv.
Set Normal/LB if you want a letterbox image on a 4:3 TV.

No luck with this....
I do not have the options shown in the screen shot.
I have tv display and then three options:

s-video
Ypbpr
rgb

Choosing any of these three makes no difference to the view.

Why dont I have what you have in the set up?

Your in this section http://ausdivx.ms11.net/xms888/26videooutput.JPG which is in 'preferences', you need to be in the 'general setup' section and then select 'tv display'

hmm, perhaps you have 1.2b
There is older firmware here http://ausdivx.ms11.net/xms888/firmware_page.htm but the only problem is, as 1.2b has not been released as a download as yet, you can't go back to it if you decide to put 1.2a on.

I have checked the version I have:
it is DF002A

hmm, that's interesting.
The screenshots were from the original version.
I didn't remember 2a being different in that regard, but I have a w/s TV, so it wouldn't have jumped out at me.
I don't have a 888 at the moment, so perhaps there is someone out there with a XMS-888 and version 2a firmware with a 4:3 tv that can check on theirs?

Its very simple :)

there can not be a disc in the tray when you go into setup or the preference options for l/b etc are not available.

aahh, well spotted, the Mediatek players are like that as well.
Very strange how they do that.

I actually did have a code that re-enabled the preferences while a disc was in the XMS888, but lost the site :( .

When I updated the last firmware I lost the feature and have tried a million ways to get the preferences back while a disc was in the player, maybe jokiin can query the manufacturer about that particular feature.

Press stop twice and you should be able to access the preferences menu, this is consistent with most players on the market, they just won't allow it when in pre stop mode.
