PCI express Question

Does anyone know if graphic PCI cards can be used in graphic PCI express slots?
Is it backwards compatible?
The mainboard i'm looking at has the specs for the graphics interface as PCI-Express x 16 (x8) what does the x16 and the x8 refer to?

Your help will be sooooo appreciated! :)x16 and x8 refers to the speed of the graphics accelerator. PCI 2 (PCI express) IS NOT backwards compatible with AGP OR the old PCI standard. Sorry....
