Get a fixed-line phone card when you arrive in Australia (available from
myriad companies almost everywhere) and pay 2c or 3c/min + flagfall of about
30c.

Or get a prepaid mobile phone card and pay about 74c/min (Optus), 66c/min
(Telstra) or 35c/min (Vodafone). NB Vodafone's coverage is not as good as
Telstra, especially in rural areas. However, Voda is OK in major cities and
the larger rural towns. AAPT resells Voda and charges 40c/min to the UK.
However, its local call (ie calls within Australia) cost of 49c/min with no
flagfall, charged by the second, is lower than most local call prepay rates.
