View Full Version : Telstra CDMA roaming to US?

Anyone know if Telstra do CDMA/AMPS roaming to any US carriers,
particularly Verizon? Telstra support wasn't too sure what I was on
about and thought I meant GSM roaming, in which case I needed to ensure
I have a tri-band phone. :)

You will need GSM - preferably a ~quad~ band phone, although tri-band works
as well.

No CDMA outbound roaming agreements currently exist

Yep, got that (tri-band. Can't see ay existing roaming agreements with
anyone using 850MHz) but GSM1900 coverage is pretty lacking, where-as
CDMA/AMPS covers almost every inch of the country (including the parts
I'll be spending plenty of time in that GSM1900 doesn't cover).
Looks like I just pick up a Verizon pre-pay when I get there... Wonder
if they can let me BYO CDMA-dual-band/AMPS phone - doubt it.

Don't pay too much attention to coverage maps or listed roaming agreements
- these can be well out of date.
Both Cingular & AT&T use 850 & 1900 band; not sure about T-Mobile.
As well as these majors there are a lot of Mum and Dad operators in the
USA (mainly AMPS) but in Arizona I had a connection (GSM) with someone
who wasn't listed on the BigPong web site, and it worked fine.
You may have inbound sms message problems with AT&T from time to time -
the just keep sending the same message over and over and over!

Due to Telstra's inability to negotiate an outbound deal with any overseas
CDMA carriers. The predominantly rural and regional subscribers are shafter
yet again. No wonder why the Nats will not let Telstra be flogged off yet.

When I was there a few months ago their maps seemed somewhat accurate.
Agreed about the roaming agreements though.
> Both Cingular & AT&T use 850 & 1900 band; not sure about T-Mobile.
Hm, gsmworld says all three are only 1900 - not that it's always all
that accurate or up-to-date though.
What would be really neat is a phone (and the standards) that can swap
between quad-band GSM, tri-band CDMA and AMPS. In fact, why not throw a
Sat phone in there too? Looks like CDMA<->GSM roaming is still a way off
though.

Heh, yeah I've noticed that one. It seemed half the time they'd just
refuse to accept my SMS.

To sell Telstra or organise CDMA roaming? If the latter, Telecom NZ have
international CDMA roaming, don't they?

Qualcomm have released a CDMA-Quad Band GSM chip; remains to be seen if
manufacturers take it up.

Its not viable for Telstra to have international CDMA roaming
telecom NZ *MUST* have it, as there are only two carriers in NZ and they
both need to implement as many features as possible to get customers

What - you reckon it would be worse if Telstra was fully privatised?
Are you saying that partial ownership of Telstra by the govt has been
tremendously successful in improving rural and regional service?

Totally screwed that argument when there is only 1.1 CDMA networks in AU

Orange in Thailand use R-UIMs to let its CDMA customers to have outbound
roaming, using their R-UIMs on GSM handsets.
Asked Telstra about it on the 2280 and they said unavailable.
Telstra more backward...

Hm, neat. What'd be better is a single phone that did both CMDA and GSM.

Why not? Why is it viable for GSM roaming agreements to the GSM1900
carriers in the US but not CDMA roaming agreements (where your
travelling users would get better coverage and presumably make more
calls).

In .au there are 1.1 CDMA carriers and 4 GSM. How is the the number of
competitors relevant?

Financial viability has nothing to do with it. It's a lack of competition
that is slowing the release of new features in the CDMA area.
There is only one decent CDMA network in Aus. If you desparately need
outbound roaming, there is no risk to Telstra of you leaving and going with
another carrier, as there is no other carrier to go to.

What a load of crock. You can take your number to any other carrier you
like, GSM, or CDMA.
> > In .au there are 1.1 CDMA carriers and 4 GSM. How is the the number of

In NZ, there is just "you" and "them".
NZ is not that big and coverage is not as much of an issue as in Oz.
So you have to compete elsewhere, and thats features. Thus, given that Voda
NZ has GSM outbound roaming, TNZ *must* get CDMA outbound roaming. Its
compete, or die.
In Oz, its very big, and Telstra concentrates on coverage more than anyone
else (thats why you even have CDMA to begin with). If you liked, Telstra
could have just gone GSM, and you could have outbound GSM roaming on a
service that doesnt even have coverage in your own town, and how far would
that get you?
Thats the same reason why Voda had a lot of VAS before anyone else, because
they knew they had to compete on VAS because they decided not to compete on
coverage.
