Thought I'd post back, for those interested...

My 6385 was replaced when put in for software upgrade under warranty,
because of a signal problem (which I didn't evenn know about, but it does
seem better now...).

Software on the new phone is v.418 (latest on Orange). Noticed some bug
fixes, like the active call timer.

Phonebook still sometimes looses its search capability on anything but the
first letter, but I've found a workaround:

By entering the programming menu, then quitting it, the phonebook starts
working correctly again (sort of like restarting a computer I guess). The
code is *3001#12345# (got it off this ng a while back). I just enter that,
then hit the exit key.

Phone book then searches correctly :-)
