I saw an Optus print ad this evening... it claimed coverege of 97% of
the NSW population. I wonder what the ads in other states show?
The ad says they've doubled coverage in the last 5 years.

In terms of percentage of landmass, I would tend to agree. The amount of
new infrastructure in the middle of nowhere in QLD is quite extensive
now, while 5 years ago you couldn't even get a decent signal along many
parts of the Bruce Highway.
A lot of the Central QLD coalfields are covered now, I was a little
puzzled as to why they were covered. As it turns out, one part was a
deal with the QLD government to cover these areas in return for a
percentage of the government's business, and the other is that coal
miners are mostly on 6-figure salaries, and travel to Mackay and
Rockhampton frequently, hence require coverage. I suppose building
towers in the middle of nowhere is profitable if people actually use them :)

Yep, some time ago I predicted that Optus would exceed Telstra's GSM
coverage... that situation is now not too far off.

Here is the ad text:
"Mobile coverage to 97% of the NSW population? 'yes'
We've doubled our land coverage in NSW, VIC and QLD in the past five
years alone. So wherever you are, there's an excellent change we're
there with you.
Optus Mobile. Going Further."

and 200 cdma bases as well, with more >500 planned for the next fin year

I saw the Victorian version of this ad in Melbourne over the weekend
where Optus claimed 99% population coverage in Victoria.
Any comments Mikey?

To quote your own line: You made the claim, you back it up.

Its actually Rod's line.
Fish-breath actually made the quote about the 99%, he can back that up. If
he thinks Telstra is less or more, he gets to back that up
