View Full Version : Best guitar based song/guitar solo

Watching 90s day on MusicMAX inspired this question:
Which song is the best guitar based (ie, guitar as a focus) song?
Alternatively, which song has the best guitar solo?
My vote for both categories is Gary Moore's 'Still got the Blues". Great
song, excellent and emotive guitar work!
Suggestions please?

yeah Josh MUSIC:):):)
Because I like a Strat strung in "High Tune"
I go for the strung together solos in
1 Pink Floyd's Comfortably Numb
2 The 12 String picking in Hotel California
3 Knopfler & Chet Atkins doing Imagine
4 Ted Nugent In Stranglehold
5 Stevie Howe Starship Trooper of a great Yes Album
Any Thing By Gilmour Or Page of course .
But My sit in AWE award goes to the hellecasters
and very few NON Musos know of this group
But consists of the guitarists Guitarists :-)

Best guitar song of all time is my favourite "Classical Gas" by anyone who
can play the whole song!

Yep - that's a good one :)
Another great guitar sound that comes to mind is a version of "Wildwood
Flower" I heard 30-40 years ago, acoustic guitar duet, one of them being a
12-string.
And there were always those instrumentals by the Shadows.....

Saw Yes in concert. My ignorance shows here but that bassist is amazing.

How about:
Pink Floyd - Wish you were here. Simple but good.
Saw Jimmy Page play Stairway to Heaven on acoustic. Absolutely Brilliant.
Stevie Ray - Saw his first "big" concert where he was opening act for the
Moody Blues. Does some good Hendrix covers.
Jimi Hendrix would still have to be king for totally reinventing the art of
guitar playing and getting it to do things no-one had ever done before. (eg.
Star Spangled Banner - which I call Star Strangled Banner).
Oh yeah, Boston weren't to bad for being a few album band.
Lots of great guitarists out there and each has their own style.
A great guitarist can touch the soul.

Eric Clapton was also at the same concert I saw Jimmy Paige at. It was
called "The British Invasion" and had all the great British guys playing
together.

Take your pick: Stairway To Heaven, Time By Pink Floyd, Purple Haze,
Foxy Lady, All Along The Watchtower......the list goes on.

you're gay.

I feel bad for calling Josh gay now ( ok, now i'm over it ). Great thread,
nice contributions.
Funny re: Classical Gas, I love it, but I find not too many people I speak
to ( mid-30's ) know it, and i'm sure it was even once played on the ABC as
much as "Popcorn". Oh well, their loss ;)
Like all the Floyd stuff too.

I've heard people mention it but never heard it myself. Is there *any*
recording of it?

Agreed, so many. All of which are subtely suited to a particular set of
circumstances.

It most definitely was but the details are fuzzy...... ;-) One thing that I
do remember is "The Experience" being undescribably awesome.
PS. Went to the Pink Floyd concert in Melbourne (way back) and managed to
fit back into my "British Invasion" concert T-Shirt. While on the tram to
the venue two of the most absolutely stoned people I've ever seen were
awestruck at the T-Shirt. I told them "You should have been
there.....absolutely mind blowing".
