Has anyone noticed that stores such as HMV and JB are now offering far more
singles priced at $3.99? And they appear to be almost permanent prices as
opposed to the sweet $1.99 limited releases that we occasionally see.

While the majority of singles are still priced at $4.99, it seems a good
quarter of releases are now coming in at the new, lower price point.

I think this is great for consumers but I fear it's gonna decimate the
singles market. And gawd forbid if you were an independent planning on
releasing singles.

Now, if only Sanity Online adopted the new pricing...

A couple of years ago Dick Smith Powerhouse near me were selling all new CD
singles for $2 each. Only problem was that they had a very limited selection
(but often 20 or 30 copies of the same single) - usually of Top 20 songs. It
was a good way to pick up a single that you rather liked (but didn't
necessarily grab you), for an album you had no intention of buying. A few
months back they went up to $3, which is still quite good from the consumer
point of view.

Thanks for the tip re HMV / JB, I'll check them out as they normally have a
(slightly) better range than DS Powerhouse.
