7. This week's top 50:

Ten brand new entries into the top 50 this week, meaning that one in
five singles in last week's top 50 didn't survive to make it into
this week's chart. Three of those new entries crash straight into
the top 10, including a debut at number one, which ruins Eminem's
chance of spending a second week at the top with "Just Lose It"
as he slips to number 2 this week. While Joel Turner finally
managed to outsell Delta Goodrem last week, this week is a
different story. Joel's "These Kids" moves down from number 2 to
4, while Delta Goodrem's "Out Of The Blue" holds firm at number 3
despite a new entry above her. On the albums chart, Delta
scores a chart-topper with the release of her "Mistaken Identity"
album. It has shipped an incredible 3-times platinum to stores
in its first week of sale, and is well on its way to emulating
the success of her first album, "Innocent Eyes", which sold an
amazing one million copies in Australia. Internationally,
Delta is doing well with her "Out Of The Blue" single going top
20 in Ireland and debuting at number 9 in the U.K. this week.

Excluding Delta Goodrem, every single that was in last week's
top 10 suffers a drop this week. Simple Plan, Armand Van Helden
and Maroon 5 all drop out of the top 10. And as we head into
one of the busiest times of year in record stores and on the
music charts, its clear that sales are on the rise. 17 out of
the 18 biggest selling singles of this week has at least a
gold sales accreditation - 6 of those have actually gone platinum.

While there was quite a large number of singles released for
this charting week, there were three that really stood out,
due to the high profile of the artist, the popularity of
the song on radio, or the hype surrounding the release.
In fact, this week's single sales chart from music giant
HMV shows that we have new entries in the number 1, 2 and
3 positions. However, on the national charts spanning
many retailers across the whole country, those three
big new release singles occupy the number 1, 5 and 7
position, and not in the same order as HMV ranked them!

1. WHAT YOU WAITING FOR? - Gwen Stefani
Many people will instantly recognize Gwen Stefani as the
lead singer of the highly successful American group,
No Doubt. Their triple-platinum selling "Tragic Kingdom"
album from 1996 earned them a string of big hits including
"Just A Girl" (number 3, August 1996) and "Don't Speak"
(number 1, February 1997). In 2000, they were back with
their "Return Of Saturn" album which scored them a top
10 hit single in the form of "Ex-Girlfriend" (number 9,
April 2000). The following year, Gwen dabbled in music
outside of No Doubt, teaming up with rapper Eve on the top
5 smash "Let Me Blow Ya Mind". 2002 saw Gwen back recording
with No Doubt and the "Rock Steady" album from that year gave
the group big hits including "Hey Baby" (number 7, January 2002)
and "Hella Good" (number 8, June 2002). In late 2003, No
Doubt released their "Singles 1992 - 2003" album, which
featured the group's past big hits and the newly recorded
track "It's My Life" which went on to become a top 10
hit on the singles chart. Now in 2004, Gwen has embarked on
a full-scale solo career. Her debut solo album, "Love
Angel Music Baby", hits record stores next week, and from that
album comes her brand new single, "What You Waiting For?".
Almost 8 years after she last hit number one as part of
the group No Doubt, Gwen Stefani now returns to the top
of the Australian singles chart with her brand new solo
single. "What You Waiting For?" has been popular on
radio and video shows, and the Alice in Wonderland theme
used in the music video for the single has generated much
interest in the song.

5. VERTIGO - U2
Next week, Irish rock group U2 release their first new studio
album in over 4 years, titled "How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb".
From that album comes the single "Vertigo", which is available
in two different CD single versions and also as a DVD single.
It debuts at number 5 this week, despite topping the HMV
sales chart issued over the weekend. "Vertigo" has enjoyed
lengthy exposure on radio and is U2's 13th top 5 hit since
"Desire" in late 1988, which was lifted off their "Rattle
And Hum" album. Over the last few years, U2's success on
the singles chart has been characterized by a high debuting
single that dramatically dives the following week. Let us
examine the first two charting weeks of some recent U2 singles.

7. MY PREROGATIVE - Britney Spears
Not quite making it four number one singles in a row,
Britney Spears crashes into the top 10 this week with
her cover of Bobby Brown's number 40 hit from mid-1989,
"My Prerogative". Britney's version is clearly immensely
more successful than the original, and features on her
just released "Greatest Hits" album which includes
17 of her previously released singles (not all were
available in Australia) plus 3 brand new tracks, of
which "My Prerogative" is one of them. Despite many people
ready to write off Britney as a one-hit pop wonder when
she conquered the world charts with "Baby One More Time"
back in 1999, she has now been part of almost 6 years of
incredible and sustained musical success. Britney's last album,
"In The Zone", spawned three number one singles in a row,
including her much anticipated duet with Madonna on "Me Against
The Music". Her tally of singles since 1999 includes 5 number
ones and a total of 10 top ten hits when you include this
week's debut of "My Prerogative". By the way, Britney is
not the only artist to cover a Bobby Brown track this year.
Melbourne group, Mercury4, released their cover of "Every Little
Step" in the middle of this year, but unlike Britney, they
were unable to beat the success of the original version.
Mercury4 took "Every Little Step" to number 27, while
Bobby Brown took it all the way to number 8 in late 1989.

20. BALLA BABY - Chingy
American hip hop artist and rapper, Chingy, recently enjoyed
success with his "Jackpot" album which gave him the hits
"Right Thurr" (number 6, September 2003), "Holidae Inn"
(featuring Ludacris and Snoop Dogg, number 13, February 2004)
and "One Call Away (featuring J. Weav, number 5, May 2004).
Chingy's brand new album, "Powerballin", has just been
released, and the first single to be lifted off it is
the track "Balla Baby" which debuts somewhat disappointingly
at number 20 for him. The "Powerballin" album sees Chingy
collaborate with artists including Janet Jackson, Nate Dogg,
and R. Kelly.

24. FLY - Hilary Duff
17 year old Hilary Duff released her second album (self-titled)
last month, which peaked at number 6. Missing from that
album was Hilary's duet with her older sister, Haylie,
titled "Our Lips Are Sealed", which went top 10 last
month and featured on the soundtrack to Hilary's latest
movie, "A Cinderella Story". However, what you will find
on Hilary's current album is a song called "Fly". That
song is her brand new single, which debuts at number 24
this week.

28. WORD UP! - Korn
American rockers, Korn, hit number 8 on the albums chart
last month with their "Greatest Hits Volume 1" album,
which features many of their hits including their highest
charting one to date in Australia, "Here To Stay"
(number 12, June 2002). On Korn's "Greatest Hits Volume 1"
album is a track called "Word Up!" which was originally
a top 10 hit for Cameo in 1986. Korn's version has been
released as a single, coming in at number 28 this week.
Another cover you'll find on Korn's album is "Another
Brick In The Wall" - a song that Pink Floyd enjoyed
huge success with in 1979.

31. SHADOW - Ashlee Simpson
The battle between sisters Jessica and Ashlee Simpson
continues this week. While Jessica has been churning
out hits since 2000, younger sister Ashlee released
her debut single, "Pieces Of Me" back in August,
which was a big top 10 hit for her. Ashlee now
returns with her second single, "Shadow", which enters
the chart at number 31 this week. Jessica's current
single, a cover of Robbie Williams' "Angels", is
still in the top 50 after peaking recently at number 27.

33. ITALIAN LOVE SONG - Tina Arena
Melbourne's Tina Arena has had a long association with
music in Australia. After featuring in the 1980s youth
music/entertainment show, "Young Talent Time", Tina Arena secured
a record deal and released an album titled "Strong As Steel".
The debut single from that album was the dance track "I Need Your
Body" which reached number 3 in September 1990, transforming Tina's
appearence from the girl-next-door look into that of a raunchy and
provocative music star. However, Tina felt that continuing
to churn out pop music in the form of "I Need Your Body" would
not be sustainable. So when Tina returned back to the music
world in late 1994, her style had completely changed. She
released an album called "Don't Ask" which featured power
ballads such as "Chains" (number 4, February 1995) and mellow
pop tracks such as "Sorrento Moon" (number 7, June 1995).
Her "Don't Ask" album was the biggest selling album of 1995
in Australia, and in 1996 it was certified as a 9 times platinum
seller with sales well in excess of half a million copies.
Tina followed on with that successful formula with the release
of her "In Deep" album in 1997. Whilst only a triple platinum
seller as compared to her previous album, "In Deep" yielded
Tina her highest charting single ever, the power ballad
"Burn" which debuted at number 2 in its first week of release.
Between 1998 and 2000, Tina's career exploded in France. In
1998, her duet with Marc Anthony, "I Want To Spend My Lifetime
Loving You", topped the French charts and she followed that
up with several singles recorded in French which set the
European charts on fire. Tina returned to Australia in 2000
to sing at the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in
Sydney and then began work on a new album titled "Just Me".
Commercially, "Just Me" was a failure when released in November
2001. Die-hard fans ensured the album debuted at number 7
when released, but within four weeks, the album had completely
disappeared from the top 50. The first two singles from the album
were "Soul Mate #9" and "Dare To Make You Happy" - both were
essentially flops. However in August 2002, the album track
"Symphony of Life" was remixed to give it a contemporary electronic
sound, and it stormed into the Australian charts at number 8
when released. Tina has recently released her "Greatest Hits"
album which went top 10. Interestingly, she has completely
ignored material from her first album, "Strong As Steel", in
this greatest hits package. On the album is a new song
Tina has recorded, titled "Italian Love Song", which debuts at
number 33 this week. Check out Tina Arena's official web site
at http://www.tinaarena.com.au/. You'll see she's currently
on a national tour, including regional cities.

34. BEAUTIFUL WOMAN - Kyle
From Sydney comes 18 year-old Kyle - Australia's newest R&B singer
and songwriter to hit the charts. Kyle sports a Guy Sebastian
look-alike afro hair style in the video clip for his new
single, "Beautiful Woman", which debuts at number 34 this week.
The chorus of "Beautiful Woman" samples some of the music
used in Dr Hook's 1979 hit "When You're In Love With A
Beautiful Woma".

44. IS IT 'COS I'M COOL? - Mousse T. featuring Emma Lanford
This week's final entry comes from Mousse T - the German
producer behind the 1998 top 20 hit "Horny '98" and
collaborater with Britain's Tom Jones on the top 40
smash from 2000, "Sex Bomb". Mousse T. now releases
the dance track "Is It Coz I'm Cool?" which features the
vocals of Emma Lanford and comes in at number 44 this week.

A single to watch out for on next week's chart is Tammin Sursok's
"Pointless Relationship". Tammin played the role of Dannii
Sutherland on Channel 7's long-running internationally successful
"Home & Away" soap, departing from the show last week. Her
departure in reality was to give her the time to pursue a
career in music. In the past, "Home & Away" has been the
poor sibling of rival soap Channel 10's "Neighbours" in terms
of turning TV stars into singers. The list of actresses that
emerged from Neighbours and delivered chart-topping Australian
singles is impressive, and includes the likes of Kylie Minogue,
Natalie Imbruglia, Holly Valance and Delta Goodrem. "Home & Away"
has never spawned an artist that has gone onto achieving
chart-topping success. Dannii Minogue joined "Home & Away"
as Emma Jackson in 1988 and in 1990 released the number 4 hit,
"Love And Kisses". More recently, Bec Cartwright, who currently
plays the role of Hayley Lawson, went top 10 in late 2002 with
her single, "All Seats Taken". However, Tammin Sursok may
beat them all and give "Home & Away" its first ever Australian
number one single. Her song, "Pointless Relationship", has
just been released, and unlike the musical style followed by
many actress singers before her, blends rock sounds into a pop
track, similar to the highly successful formula currently being
enjoyed by artists such as Ashlee Simpson and Avril Lavigne.
Thanks to strong video airplay, Tammin could be on the verge of
giving "Home & Away" its biggest hit single ever on next week's
chart.

9. This week's feature song lyrics

------------------------------------
WHAT YOU WAITING FOR? - Gwen Stefani
------------------------------------
What an amazing time
What a family
How did the years go by?
Now it's only me

Tick tock
Tick tock
Tick tock
Tick tock
Tick tock
Tick tock
Tick tock
Tick tock
(La la la la la)

Like a cat in heat stuck in a moving car
Scary conversations,
Shut my eyes, can't find the brake
What if they say that you're a cutter?

Naturally i'm worried if i do it alone
Who really cares cuz it's your life
You never know, it could be great
Take a chance cuz you might grow
Oh... oh ohhh

What you waiting
What you waiting
What you waiting
What you waiting
What you waiting for!?

What you waiting
What you waiting
What you waiting
What you waiting
What you waiting for!?

Tick tock
Tick tock
Tick tock
Tick tock

Take a chance you stupid Ho

Like an echo pedal, you're repeating yourself
You know it all by heart
Why are you standing in one place?
Born to blossom, bloom to perish

You know you're only known
Cuz of your sex chromosome
I know it's so messed up how our society all thinks (for sure)
Life is short, you're capable (uh huh)
Oh... oh ohhh

LOOK AT YOUR WATCH NOW!
YOU'RE STILL A SUPER HOT FEMALE!
YOU GOT YOUR MILLION DOLLAR CONTRACT!
AND THEY'RE ALL WAITING FOR YOUR HOT TRACK!

What you waiting
What you waiting
What you waiting
What you waiting
What you waiting for!?

What you waiting
What you waiting
What you waiting
What you waiting
What you waiting for!?

I can't wait to go
Back into Japan
Get me lots of brand new fans
Osaka, Tokyo
You Harajuku girls
Damn, you've got some wicked style...

GO!
LOOK AT YOUR WATCH NOW!
YOU'RE STILL A SUPER HOT FEMALE!
YOU GOT YOUR MILLION DOLLAR CONTRACT!
AND THEY'RE ALL WAITING FOR YOUR HOT TRACK!

What you waiting
What you waiting
What you waiting
What you waiting
What you waiting for!?

What you waiting
What you waiting
What you waiting
What you waiting
What you waiting for!?

What you waiting for?
What you waiting for?
Take a chance, you stupid ho

Take a chance, you stupid ho
What you waiting for?
What you waiting for?
Take a chance, you stupid ho

VERTIGO - U2
------------
Lights go down
It's dark
The jungle is your head
Can't rule your heart
I'm feeling so much stronger
Than I thought
Your eyes are wide
And though your soul
it can't be bought
your mind can wander

Hello, Hello
Hola
I'm at a place called vertigo
It's everything I wish I didn't know
Except you give me something I can feel
Feel

The night is full of holes
Those bullets rip the sky
Of ink with gold
They twinkle as the boys play rock and roll
They know that they can't dance
At least they know

I can't stand the beat
I'm askin' for the cheque
Girl with crimson nails
Has Jesus 'round the neck
Swinging to the music
Swinging to the music
Woooao

Hello, Hello
Hola!
I'm at a place called Vertigo
It's everything I wish I didn't know
But you give me something I can feel
Feel

All this, all this can be yours
All of this, all of this can be yours
All this, all of this can be yours
Just give me what I want
And no one gets hurt

Hello, Hello
Hola!
I'm at a place called Vertigo
Lights go down and all I know
Is that you give me something I can feel
You're teaching me ...aaahhh
Your love is teaching me ...aaaah
How to kneel
Kneel

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah...
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah!

MY PREROGATIVE - Britney Spears
-------------------------------
People can take everything away from you
But they can never take away your truth
But the question is..
Can you handle mine?

They say I'm crazy
I really don't care
That's my prerogative
They say I'm nasty
But I don't give a damn
Getting boys is how I live
Some ask me questions
Why am I so real?
But they don't understand me
I really don't know the deal about my sister
Trying hard to make it right
Not long ago
Before I won this fight

Everybody's talking all this stuff about me
Why don't they just let me live?
I don't need permission, make my own decisions
That's my prerogative
that's my prerogative
(it's my prerogative)

It's the way that I wanna live (it's my prerogative)
You can't tell me what to do

Don't get me wrong
I'm really not souped
Ego trips is not my thing
All these strange relationships really gets me down
I see nothing wrong in spreading myself around

Everybody's talking all this stuff about me
Why don't they just let me live?
I don't need permission, make my own decisions
That's my prerogative
That's my prerogative

Everybody's talking all this stuff about me
Why don't they just let me live?
I don't need permission, make my own decisions
That's my prerogative
that's my prerogative

It's the way that I wanna live (it's my prerogative)
You can't tell me what to do

why can't I live my life
without all of the things
That people say
oh oh

Everybody's talking all this stuff about me
Why don't they just let me live?
I don't need permission, make my own decisions
That's my prerogative (they say I'm crazy)

Everybody's talking all this stuff about me
Why don't they just let me live? (they say I'm nasty)
I don't need permission, make my own decisions
That's my prerogative
(it's my prerogative)

FLY - Hilary Duff
-----------------
Any moment, everything can change,
Feel the wind on your shoulder,
For a minute, all the world can wait,
Let go of your yesterday.

Can you hear it calling?
Can you feel it in your soul?
Can you trust this longing?
And take control,

Fly
Open up the part of you that wants to hide away
You can shine,
Forget about the reasons why you can't in life,
And start to try, cause it's your time,
Time to fly.

All your worries, leave them somewhere else,
Find a dream you can follow,
Reach for something, when there's nothing left,
And the world's feeling hollow.

Can you hear it calling?
Can you feel it in your soul?
Can you trust this longing?
And take control,

Fly
Open up the part of you that wants to hide away
You can shine,
Forget about the reasons why you can't in life,
And start to try, cause it's your time,
Time to fly.

And when you're down and feel alone,
Just want to run away,
Trust yourself and don't give up,
You know you better than anyone else,

Any moment, everything can change,
Feel the wind on your shoulder,
For a minute, all the world can wait,
Let go of yesterday,

Fly
Open up the part of you that wants to hide away
You can shine,
Forget about the reasons why you can't in life,
And start to try,
Fly
Forget about the reasons why you can't in life,
And start to try, cause it's your time,
Time to fly.

Any moment, everything can change.

WORD UP! - Korn
---------------
Yo, pretty ladies around the world
Gotta a weird thing to show you
So tell all the boys and girls
Tell your brother, your sister and your momma too
Were about to go down
And you know just what to do
Wave your hands in the air like you don't care
Glide by the people as they start to look and stare
Do your dance, Do your dance
Do your dance quick, mom

C'mon baby tell me what's the word
Now, word up
(ahh ahh)
Everybody say
When you hear the call you got to get it under way
Word up
(ahh ahh)
It's the call, word
No matter where you say it
You know that you'll be heard

Now all you sucker DJs
Who think you're fly
There's got to be a reason
And we know the reason why
You try to put on those airs
And act real cool
But you got to realize
That you're acting like fools
If there's music, we can use it
Be free to dance
We don't have the time for psychological romance
No romance, no romance
No romance for me, mom

C'mon baby tell me what's the word
Now, word up
(ahh ahh)
Everybody say
When you hear the call you got to get it under way
Word up
(ahh ahh)
It's the call, word
No matter where you say it
You know that you'll be heard
(woo!)

Word up
(ahh ahh)
Everybody say
When you hear the call you got to get it under way
Word up
(ahh ahh)
It's the call, word
No matter where you say it
You know that you'll be heard

Word up
(ahh ahh)
Everybody say
When you hear the call you got to get it under way
Word up
(ahh ahh)
It's the call, word
No matter where you say it
You know that you'll be heard

SHADOW - Ashlee Simpson
-----------------------
I was six years old
When my parents ran away
I was stuck inside a broken life
I couldn't wish away
She was beautiful
She had everything and more
And my escape was hiding out and running for the door

Somebody listen please
It used to be so hard being me
Living in the shadow
Of someone else's dream
Trying to find a hand to hold but every touch felt cold to me
Living in a nightmare
A never-ending sleep
But now that I am wide awake
My chains are finally free
Don't feel sorry for me

All the days collided
One less perfect than the next
I was stuck inside someone else's life and always second best
Oh, I love you now 'cause now I realize
That it's safe outside to come alive in my identity

So if you're listening
There's so much more to me you haven't seen
Living in the shadow
Of someone else's dream
Trying to find a hand to hold but every touch felt cold to me
Living in a nightmare
A never-ending sleep
But now that I am wide awake
Then I can finally see
Don't feel sorry-

Mother, sister, father, sister, mother
Everything's cool now
Mother, sister, father, sister, mother
Everything's cool now
Oh, my life is good
I've got more than anyone should
Oh, my life is good
And the past in the past

I was living in the shadow
Of someone else's dream
Trying to find a hand to hold but every touch felt cold to me
I'm living in a new day
I'm living it for me
And now that I am wide awake
Then I can finally be
Don't feel sorry for me
Don't feel sorry, don't feel sorry for me
Don't feel sorry, don't feel sorry for me

Living in, living in, living in the shadow
Living in, living in, living in a new day

ITALIAN LOVE SONG - Tina Arena
------------------------------
Fire in your eyes, a promise of true love and protection
but in your mind, neccessity of getting your way.
Tradition disguised. Suspicion and lies.

Selfish desire, you're looking for maternal perfection.
Oh what a shame, it's something you can't get on your own.
You want me gone but you want me to stay.
And you need my absolution, for the sins you won't confess.

CHORUS:
Sing low, so no one hears you and sing high, making me cry
I hear something when wrapped in your arms...
An Italian song of love.

Who can resist a show of such apparent devotion?
Could there exist, a love of such unfaultering strength?
Convinced of a dream, denying a scheme
And you need my absolution, for the sins you wont confess.

(CHORUS)

Sing low, help me remember how you loved making me cry
Now I hear only echoes and whispers,
An Italian song of love

IS IT 'COS I'M COOL? - Mousse T. featuring Emma Lanford
-------------------------------------------------------
Is it 'cos I'm cool
Why you dress like me
is it honesty or you just a fool
Is it 'cos I'm cool
Why the school kids laugh
cause the papers got it wrong again
Is it 'cos I'm cool
Take a piece of me
serve me up on a plate in your restaurant

Is it 'cos I'm cool
Is it 'cos I'm cool

Is it 'cos I'm fly
'Cos I said what I said
when I said what I said but I didn't say
Is it 'cos I'm hip
Why you dig my sh*t
and you say I am a fan now I understand
Is it 'cos I'm hot
Why you mention me in your V.I.P memories

Is it 'cos I'm cool
Is it 'cos I'm cool

I ain't buying or selling today
I'm just looking around
For some decent conversation
No hidden agenda
No phony pretender
No holding on out for no sweet sixteen
Or peppermint dream
I'll call you please don't call me

Is it 'cos I'm cool
Is it 'cos I'm cool

Is it 'cos I'm Smart
Why you break my heart
with the lies you tell baby kiss and tell
Is it 'cos I'm wrong
That you jump right in
with no discipline baby sink or swim
Is it 'cos we're friends
why you use my name just to entertain yeah

Is it 'cos I'm cool
Is it 'cos I'm cool

Time keeps ticking and running away
And It's taking us fast to a brand new free dimension
Too cool to mention well that's the intention
But some of us too dame blind to see
It's setting us free
To say goodbye to jealousy

Is it 'cos I'm cool
Is it 'cos I'm cool

Joe, that's a strange name for an Eskimo.
Maybe they thought they were Canadian...

I'm getting as bad as ARIA. :-) Sorry, it was a typo - when they
previously charted with that single, I did correctly list them as
Australian, but forgot to when they re-entered the top 50
again with their single.
