I don't think a firmware upgrade would achieve much more because 12 months down the track and very few additional features are available in the current range of MPeg4 players. Certain features that were on the 'wishlist' for an upgrade would be beyond firmware, others not what would be regarded as critical for the ongoing operation of the equipment.
The chipset is the key to upgrades, IMHO, unfortunately its to old for the chipset manufacturer to show much interest in further firmware development.

true, but it would be nice if I could just get my hands on the latest firmware, let alone anything new. Just getting the box to play xvids can be a pain.

Can you define what you mean by 'the latest firmware'?

I was under the impression there is firmware running around out there on xms-888's unavailable for download, is this incorrect or is the xms888.tk site still showing the absolute latest firmware people have on their box's?

That is the last release, the later models of the XMS888 (the ones without the red lights under the tray) have a different firmware revision number, it's not known if there are actually any differences in the hardware that may prohibit this firmware being used on the earlier version, I'm still waiting on a copy of this firmware from the factory. Once I do I can test and confirm. This may not help you anyway, Xvid playback is currently an issue for all standalone hardware players, check the FAQ's on www.xvid.org and you'll see what I mean.

To my knowledge, and from experience, there are only 2 issues with xvid files that is the packed streams and the pixel ratio settings. Both these problems are resolved by using mpegmodifier to reset the pixel ratio to square or unpack the frames. Other issues are usually disc related (media type) and firmware probably won't ever address this issue.

I had a cartoon series in XVID with an unpacked bitstream and square pixel AR already set but the playback was very jittery and unwatchable...anyway the latest XVID codec fixed the problem on the PC so I can understand why the player fw manufacturers can't keep up with XVID....shame though, the 888 still satisfies for most applications.

oooops forgot to ask...does mpegmodifier give you the option to reencode to divx ie in the userdata box the above mentioned stream shows XviD0009 and then a square box in the parameters box....can you insert divx in there to get it to reencode the whole avi???
...sorry if this is a dumb question
oh and happy new year everyone. :rolling:
How do I find out what version my player's firmware is? Thanks

If you have an XMS888 with no red lights under the tray you already have the latest firmware, only the early versions with the 6 leds under the tray require the firmware.

Hey guys
Love my xms888 but seems its starting to have issues playing the absolute latest DVD's. I put the incredibles and national treasure in the other night and neither work. The older dvd's I have, as early as only 6 months older, are working perfectly. But neither of these two work. Is this an issue with the player? New chemicals on dvd's these days?
Is this player reached the end of its life. I see its basically no longer supported and I'm pretty much thinking I'm going to have to move away from the XMS brand. Love strathfield but the support for their hardware is very poor.
( I have tv, amp, subwoofer, surround speakers and xms888 are all XMS branded)
I am now of the opinion the factory is never going to give us the xms888 firmware upgrade we've all been waiting for.

There will be no further firmware updates for this model, I don't think that the issue you are experiencing is firmware related anyway.

National Treasure works on mine, and the loader is suspect so I think you have issues beyond firmware.
Realistically the speed at which the technology(chipsets) are being changed any form of firmware upgrade is unlikely on cheap machines. The XMS888 at this point has probably been the best supported of any model I am aware of as it had 3 firmware upgrades compared to the 0-1 for many other units that should have got it right in the first place.
