I am interested in which SD set top boxes which have a widescreen
button on the remote (good) and which ones need to go through the menu
(bad) to change the aspect ratio.

For me, this is a key item when buying a set top box, along with the
lag time between channel changes and box size.

A quick look through aus.tv.digital has been far more useful (Thanx)
than intruction manuals or salepeople. Here is what I have found,
please add your own knowledge. It seems newer boxes are lees likely to
have this feature.

Has widescreen button on remote :)
- DGTEC DH-2000B
- Teac DVB300
- Trio HTN-9000
- Topfield

Has not got widescreen button :(
- Thompson

Hope this helps, and inspires comments,

Jonathan

(Aspect button 4:3 or 16:9 remote control)

the Teac DVB 420 also has the aspect button on the remote
Not a bad unit either, well I like it :-)

You can add all the Strong boxes to that list.

Ohhhh, how I *don't* miss the old Thomson "menu, PIN, down down down,
settings, down, TV and Video config, across across, down down down down,
enter, menu" button sequence. A set top box designed by idiots which just
happened to have excellent picture quality :-)

I've got an 'old' Thompson box, well, over 12 months, the 'UFO' looking one.
I just click on the left arrow button next to the OK button and it toggles
between 4:3 and 16:9.

No, that's the NEW Thompson box.
The old one is one you would have bought back in 2001 - it was the only
one on the market then.
