9 Jan Melbourne. After a number of car fires were reported GMH has
relented and launched a $1/2 mn recall of VS Commodores. The recall
is said to concern "auto transmission and cooler hoses and clips".
Newspapers report 3 cases of cars catching fire may be linked to
faulty hose clips. One of the [recent] vehicles affected was a police
car. There are other reports of engines "smoking heavily and then
breaking down".

19 Jan Sydney [Ch 7]. GMH reportedly spent $10K to repair one car
after it caught fire. In another car fire a police vehicle caught
fire in Vic. Vic police tried to force a recall by GMH maintained
there was no evidence of a vehicle fault. The company has now finally
given in after several months of reported stalling. A GMH rep said
the problem affected about 70K vehicles t'out Aus. The suspected fault
was in auto transmission hoses. He said the fault has not been linked
to cars that caught fire. Another problems with dip-sticks popping
out, allowing oil to spill and catch fire, was mentioned. But a lock
had been fitted to later models and that problem fixed.

19 Jan Sydney [Ch 10]. GMH has issued a VS Commodore recall. Problems
with the vehicle were 1st aired last m. A company rep said it was "no
big issue". The company plans to import 200K hoses and 800K clamps
from O/S [decoder handy?] to fix the problem, and will pay for the
full cost of the repairs.
