View Full Version : Car splutters when ignition off

I own a 1994 Mitsubish Magna and whenever I shut off the ignition
lately, it coughs and splutters for about 1-2 seconds. What would
be causing this? The NRMA didn't have any helpful advice except
to tweak the choke under the dash (which they did) but it didn't
help. It all started after a recent service at a Shell servo.

When was the last time you had it serviced and tuned?
Amazing what a little TLC can achieve.

Check the timing, maybe? Sounds like preiginition, i had that happen on my old car,
basically would keep running after i switched it off.

About 4 months ago (at Shell, as I already mentioned).

Yep, it's near the firewall, behind the air filter.

1994???
If it has in fact got a choke then it'll also have a carburettor, but
not in 1994 I would've thought. If it has got a carburettor then most
likely the servo increased the idle speed which can cause running on
(which vaguely resembles your description).
Most later model carburetted engines also have a ground idle solenoid
which fully closes the throttle when the ignition is turned off (to
prevent running on). Disabling the solenoid (which is not an uncommon
practice) will exacerbate the problem -- as will over advanced
ignition timing in the absence of a ground idle solenoid.

Well the NRMA guy said he would adjust the choke... I'm only going by
what he said. It probably is the idle speed actually. I've tried to
adjust it myself but it hasn't made much difference (some days it
still splutters, other days it doesn't).

I would say it could be a build up of cabon on the pistons which ignites the petrol after the ignition has been turn off, you could try an aditive in the fuel to try and remove it , next step is remove the head and decarbonize.

Check yer invoice for what Shell actually did. If it included plugs,
filters and setting timing, then take it back in 'cos you're probably
still under warranty unless you do shedloads of kms. Otherwise, check
plugs & air filter. If ok, check timing. Then check solenoid and other
items mentioned earlier. As a last resort if none of this works (which
something should), just pretend it's an old Renault and go up one heat
range on the plugs! Cheers

I agree: I suspect they advanced the timing to make it "feel" like it "had
been tuned" IE produces a bit more power sometimes so you think "wow they
did a good job"..............
and now it has a bit of run on when you shut it off

It can be the idle cut solenoid valve not closing and I've also seen
when the solenoid valve is not connected the mechanic may open the
throttle via the idle adjustment screw to achieve an idle, the wrong
thing to do. This will cause run on.
This may or may not apply to your 94 Magna as my Magna daze with
Mitsubishi dealer were well before this.

run on. Sounds like the thing is shagged.
Ignition timing retarded too far?
