Anyone have any thoughts on the new VW golf TDI ( 2.0) 6 speed man.
Any Pros/cons on this car much appreciated.

Way over the odds price wise, your not buying to save money [as you cannot
and wont]

Save $$$ and get the base or 2L gasoline edition Golf

Better yet buy a Mazda 3 for already duty reduced $20k or for mid $30's the
world car winner and beating the new Golf ToyotaPrius

It's worth a test drive, especially if you haven't driven modern diesel
passenger cars. I have only driven the 1.9 which is a bit down on power and
torque to the 2.0, but is about $2K cheaper.

The torque is pretty amazing, and is available across a wide rev range. The
pick up is very good and while you can definately tell is IS a diesel when
it is idling from outside the car, the sound insulation is very good and the
noise is low inside.

As far as fuel costs go, you should be able to get about 1000 kms per tank
with the diesel compared with about 600 for the 2.0FSI petrol (same price).
Since 98RON and diesel are about the same price these days, if you do 15000
kms a year, thats 15 diesel fills vs 25 98 RON fills, so about $500 per
annum at $1 per litre.

As I said, this info is for the 1.9 - try both and see if the 2.0 is worth
the extra $$$

The Golf has got several features that the Mazda3 can't match such as 6
airbags, traction control, ABS standard on all models. The comfortline -
the only model currently available with the 2.0TDi - adds rain sensing
wipers, auto headlights and a trip computer that you can't get on the Mazda.
Also, after test driving the Mazda 3 SP23, while it is a nice car with good
performance, the quality just isn't there. The instrument cluster and
speedo increments are weird too.

Also a 6speed clutchless manual with better fuel economy and performance
than the manual is much better than the power sapping old 4sp torque
coverter auto of the Mazda3, if you don't want to change gears yourself.
Manual Golfs (except 1.6) are 6 speed vs 5 speed on the Mazda.

A) I didnt ask about the Mazda 3
B) I asked about the golf TDI not the Petrol FSI version.
C) If I wanted to save money I would buy a 0.9 litre daihatsu charade with
40 kw for a measly $12,000

Thanks for the comments.

I have been trying to get a hold of a test drive 2.0 TDI but they are scarse
at the moment.
Ive been to almost all the Dealers in melb and they dont have a 2.0, Then
only ones they have are Auto 1.9 tdi's.
I should probably try the Audi A3 2.0 TDI as that is on the same platform as
the Golf But 15K more!.

Ive driven the FSI version but I would like to compare it with the TDI.
The TDI is about .5 seconds slower than the FSI but goes about 300 kms more
than it.

I know what a diesel is like, I drove an Alfa JTD In Europe and was much
suprised with the performance, especially the pulling power when changing
gears you would expect to find in a V8!.

Did a bit more reasearch and the Golf TDI came up 1st in the UK's WhatCar
mag against a BMW 1 , Audi A3 & Volvo S40.

Not sure how people could compare this car to a Mazda 3.. its a different
kettle of fish.

The word in Qld is that the 2.0 TDi isn't officially available till February
'05, but I know there is one at the dealership in central Brisbane and that
they are available for test drives in Melbourne.

You'll find a heap more info and (perhaps biased!) comments if you have a
look on here: http://forums.vwvortex.com/zeroforum?id=137

Agree with you on the Mazda3 comment - 2 very different cars.

I have had mixed results, some people some people say its going to be at
least 4 months until it is relased and aobut 2 months until I can get a test
drive.

Did a bit of poking around & I know somone that works in a VW pre-delivery
centre..
They have 3 TDI's available in stock. When mentioned to the dealer they
changed their tone and said I could take delivery of one in 3 working days..
but I NEED to TEST drive the thing first! grrr.

Good safety and low emmissions, my two main priorities. The tdi will
definitely be my next car, would love the 2l for the cutting edge
performance stats but havent driven one yet and dont know if I can justify
the extra $; if you like the 1.9l (I do), the 2l will only be better and
for only a tiny increase in fuel consumption.
Chris.

You'll get an idea of what the engine feels like, assuming the cars are
similar weights. Stuff like steering, suspension feel, etc will be
quite different between the cars, but if you can find out whether 2.0
petrol & 2.0 diesels share that stuff (ie. in the same trim-level) then
you could drive a 2.0FSI to see what that stuff is like

Yes & no; they are the same size, they do have the same amount of room,
they do have similar performance. I personally think it's a very good
comparison; and the way you go depends on your priorities. To me, the
Golf leads in areas like handling & an overall "European" feel, the 3
leads in longevity & reliability & cost-of-ownership.

You have to concede that for the price of the _cheapest_ Golf, you get
all that stuff on the Mazda - but with a better engine. The 3 costs
less, full-stop.

Yes I drove the 2.0 FSI about 3 weeks ago, however the drama is over and
finally found the TDI's to drive..

Yes agree with your comments, It really depends on the prioritys, but It
would be hard to compare the Mazda 3 petrol VS TDI cars, The diesel is a
different driving experience and has different purposes.

Moving from a V8 Powered auto donk the TDI feels more at home with me.

I'll miss the Exhaust note but I definanly wont miss the Petrol bills!

I have driven all the varients of the golf, 1.9 & 2.0 TDI + 2.0 FSI, not
impressed with the FSI and loved the 2.0TDI.
The pulling power on the TDI is great having 320 NM in a car that size (
equivalent to the Holden V6).

I want one!!!

Like diesel cars. A friend has earlier Golf in Sweden and canes
it...seems indestructible

I have a 320,000km Pugeot405 Diesel as a hack car in NZ and since new
has been trouble free.

Well, I tested 2.0TDi, it's much better than 1.9TDi, 25% more power and torque. I was considering Impreza RS 2.5, had a test drive, on the way home stopped at Holden Sutherland dealership to look at new Astra, but parked near VW place and was instantly hooked on new Golf. 1.9 TDi has good torque, but when you have 2.0L, the choice is obvious. A resale value of 1.9 won't be as good as 2.0. I was waiting for 3 weeks to get my hands on 2.0Tdi. I ordered 2.0TDi, it wasn't easy to negotiate the price, as demand is high. New Golf for Sydney delivery scheduled for March 2005 currently. The first shipment arrives in Sydney at the end of December.
