....my daughter has arrived in Bamff (is that enough 'f's?) and found that
her trusy Nokia 2110 I think it is does not work,,,,,we need a tri-band
phone instead of a dual band I believe.
Anyone have an outright local purchase recommendation that we can post to
her? Nokia preferred...

According to Telstra's website, its mobile subscribers can roam to a
choice of two Canuck networks - Microcell and Rogers - and both need
1900MHz handsets.

For a low-cost Nokia tri-band GSM - I'd go a 3120 or 6100. Depends on
your perception of 'low cost', I guess.
Nokia 6100 - $279

http://www.nokia.com/phones/6100
Nokia 3120 - $222

You should be able to get these anywhere, and if you've got time then
shop around - I've linked to Tricky's just because they've got a decent
on-line catalogue. These are decent prices for unlocked (non-prepaid)
handsets, though.
If you can be bothered, you can buy a (locked) Nokia 3120 for $129 on
Optus Pre-Paid, then pay (or recharge with) $85 to have it unlocked -
for a sum total of $214. Eight bucks less than buying an unlocked
handset, and you then also have an Optus SIM with $95+ credit to use
over 6 months. If Optus still has its 'double call credits if you
recharge within your first 7 days' offer, that makes it $180+ credit.
1800 550 937 has some scant details. If you can be bothered.
FYI if your daughter's handset is indeed a Nokia 2110 (circa 1996-97),
it's a single band (900MHz) handset only, not dual band.

Panasonic A100 is triband and unlocked from Vodafne, most outlets have
reduced to $99

Thats a fantastic price for an unlocked triband.
well done goons

After a further look, not "most" outlets, but some are $99. Many are still
$129. Nevertheless, a great deal for a triband. Not Nokia though, as the OP
wanted. I used the Panasonic A100 in Hawaii and Europe, worked fine all 3
bands. NOTE however that you have to go manually change the band settings
(ie: will not autodetect between AU/EUR and USA/Canada).

It may not be a Nokia, but if the only reason you are buying a phone is for
triband, why would you spend more?
All hail the goons for his spectacular advice

Banff - with an "n". :)
I'll avoid answering the handset question as it's been done elsewhere in
the thread.
She'll only get Rogers in Banff. If she's going up ski-ing, she'll get
reception near Lake Louise and that's about it until she heads over the
Rockies to Golden. Reception's fine heading east - and she'll even get
the (normally much cheaper) Fido once she gets to Calgary.

The Panasonic A100 is a tiny phone with good battery life, but it's ability
to receive a signal in even a moderate coverage area is really poor.
