View Full Version : XMS989 Shutting Down

Hi all,
My XMS989 has a feature I do not need!!
If I pause or hit the stop button using the remote after about 30mins the whole unit shuts down. Just as if I switched it off.
This means I then have to switch back on, go through the loading of the disc and then use the chapter button to get back to the approximate spot I was at when I paused the movie.
Am I missing something here? I have searched the forum and read the manual from front to back and can find no mention of this happening. This makes me think that it is not happening to other units, or it is simple to fix! Surely it would be a big enough nuisance to warrent a mention in the forum, so am I the only it is happening to.
That is the only bitch I have with this player as in all other respects it is brilliant.
So am I just dumb, or is there a fix for this as it is a pain not being able to leave the unit for any more than 30mins without having to start the movie from the beginning again.
Can someone please help?
Thanks
Chucka

From memory it shouldn't do this if you press stop, if you press stop you should be able to hit play and continue on from where you left off (if you press stop twice it won't start from where you left off) pressing pause is meant to be used just for looking at a scene and then continue, eg, for very short use only, if the same scene was paused for long enough it would be possible to burn an image into a plasma or rear projection screen

Thanks for the prompt reply jok11n
It does it even when I hit stop.
After about 30mins the unit shuts down just as if you had turned off the power. Does not make any difference if it is paused or actually stopped.
I read in the manual about using the stop button and being able to restart at that spot and this works if I start watching the DVD before the 30mins is up, but if not, then I have to turn the unit back on and the disc reloads from the start, just as if you had just loaded it.
This is not just with the one player either. I actually purchased 2 of these units from Strathfield Car Radio at the same time. The other unit does exactly the same thing, shuts off after 30mins.
jok11n, can you tell me if there are any other DVD players out in the market place that can play all the formats the XMS989 plays, or at least mpeg 4. Are you allowed under the forum rules to tell me this as I do not want to cause problems.

I've never actually had anyone mention the auto shutoff before on the 989, I guess it's not typical behaviour, had I have known earlier I could have added it to the list for looking at in the firmware, we are close to getting a new firmware for this player so this behaviour may change anyway. There are plenty of players available that will play the same formats, other MediaTek based players will have similar file handling abilities as your current player, Zensonic Z330, Trio DX628. ESS based players will have slightly less file handling capabilities than you current unit. There is also the new Rowa RDVD104, not sure if there are any file formats that are a problem though (different chipset) as it is new and I haven't tested it fully yet, should be a review done soon though. Also there are models from Philips and Pioneer that have had some good reports.

Thanks again jok11n
I do not think I have ever had such great service. It was only minutes ago I posted and I have a reply already!!!!!!!
As I said before jok11n, I purchased 2 units at the same time and both are doing this so it sounds like a built in action. My wife uses one in the back room during the day and the other one is in the lounge for family use. I have re-connected the old Pioneer for her as she takes ages to watch a DVD. Starts the DVD and then has other things on the go at the same time, so stops the unit and so on & so on........
Hopefully the new firmware will fix this problem (at least it is a problem for me). Otherwise I will have to buy something else.
I make my own video's and the old Pioneer would not play them so I purchased the 2 XMS989's because they would. (took a disc with me at purchase time to try in the unit).
Just remembered a mate of mine purchased one of the same players a little before me, so I will check with him and let you know if his does the same thing.
Thanks for your time jok11n

Ok, let us know how you get on. I'll have to try it and see, if it doesn't do it with the new firmware I'll let you know. Also might be worth chacking if you stop the unit and power it off yourself if it remembers where it was up to, some players do, if so it might suffice to just turn the unit off after you press stop. I know a lot of manufacturers add this kind of functionality to prevent problems from players being left on constantly, depending on the design this can leave the laser powered up which shortens the life span.

I had exactly the same problems with my 989 and auto shutdown... let alone the OSD
After 6 months and still no FW update, I went back to Bris Car sound & they replaced with a zensonic 330 and re-started the 5 Yr extnd warrty. No CHARGE :)
Good resolution, pity I had to give up on XMS, my 750 still is a great machine for my folks !
Thanks jok11n for all your assistance this year
I know mine auto off's after about 30 mine once I press stop or pause (I also have the screen saver activated). To be honust, its never really bothered me, I just assumed it was a safety feature to stop lazer damage.
