Apparantly the XBOX DVD-Rom Drive has three different manufactures:
Phillips, Thompson and Sumsung.
For more info check out: http://www.llamma.com/xbox/Repairs/xbox_dvd_version_comparison.htm
I was going to pick up a second hand XBOX (didn't want to spend $299 on that expensive pack and the old HALO and some crapola tennis game!)
Does anyone know which DVD-Rom Drive performs the best?
Is one model faster than the other....or reads all types of media such as CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R, DVD-RW, Dual Layer DVD+R, etc.
Any comments would be greatly appreciated! :D

Samsung is generally considered to be the best quality Xbox DVD drive,
and my personal experience supports this view. Thomson drives have a
high fault rate and generally read discs poorly (including original,
unscratched Xbox discs). So go for Samsung.

the brand new xboxes (xmas bundle with ncaa football &tennis), come with
either the samsung or philips dvd drive. i have the sdg-605b samsung in mine
and agree it is great! but after reading around on a couple forums, found
out that the new samsung is a version F and doesnt read all formats like the
old b, In fact the new philips drive(also a slightly new design) is
actually better in that respect.
go out and get a new xbox, and youll get one of these great drives.

How can you tell what DVD-ROM drive you have? and does any
of them support DVD-R or DVD+R?

I had that poorly disc problem until i adjusted my pot on my drive now drive
reads all my disc. I opened the drive and did the adjusting to the laser now
it can read all my disc without any problems . This makes the Laser brigter
the default was set at 1400 the lower that pot setting the brighter the
laser. I lowered it to 1084. Now I have no problems reading disc.
