I can think of two off the top of my head:
1. Joshua Chamberlain, who was the commanding general of the end of the Union line at Gettysburg (during the Civil War). His resolute defense foiled the Confederate attempt to flank the Union line in that pivotal battle. He later went on to lead a long, successful public life.
2. Edmund Muskie, descendant of Polish immigrants, Muskie was a distinguished US senator from Maine who was Hubert Humphrey's running mate in the 1968 presidential election. During a subsequent campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination, the press insulted his wife while performing its "sacred duty" and Muskie, deeply insulted, broke down during an interview. Evidently, critics felt that Muskie's concern for his wife's reputation made him usuitable to be this nation's leader, but he performed with his characteristic integrity as Pres. Carter's Secretary of State later on.
Hope this helps.
