I have the opportunity to assist a relative in the purchase of a big
screen TV. The relative does not currently have a big screen TV. The
relative is rich in $$$ and has advised me that money is not an issue
in this project. The viewing room size is approx 14 feet wide and 45
feet deep. The relative's seat in the room is currently approx 15 feet
from the viewing wall and offset to the right. The relative is 80
years old and watches alot of TV. TV shows watched are mostly news,
sitcoms and old-time movies. The relative also watches Sunday local
church sermons recorded on DVD due to an inability to attend church
services. Visiting relatives like to watch sports (Football) and DVD
movies.

What display technology is best for this situation? (LCD, Plasma, ?)?

What size is best for this situation?

What would you do in this situation?

What other data do you need to know about this situation to make
intelligent recomendations for this purchase?
Thanks for your time and expertise.

Just go and get a projector thats around 6-10 grand will serve his purpose
easily. You will need a screen id recommend 120".

Lamp replacement isnt a problem since he has the money but try get sumfin
wif around 4000-5000 hours.

Proectors however need a light controlled room so try and find 1 that will
be suitable with ambient light combined with a high gain screen as the
relative wouldnt want to be in a completely dark room all day.

If a projector isnt suitable then get HD plasma as they offer best image
quality with low maintenance costs. Try find the biggest 1 you can get.
Mostly likely 50-60 inch.

Thats a pretty big room, is the whole room being used for this TV, or is it multi-purpose?

If it has ambient light, then projectors, as much as I love them, aren't always the best devices. if you are sitting potentially ten metres from the screen though, then projection is the best option. I'd recommend going for a decent projector with a good screen and doing something to control the room lighting.

If your sitting closer, ie. 4 - 5 metres, then a big plasma is a good idea.

Just an afterthought as well, Id definately recommend allocating part of the budget to a learning remote control. if your relative is eighty years old, then ease of use is a major factor. you'd be best to use a macro remote that can turn on the device and give you device control. also an IR repeater kit may help with this.

I'd try heading to a few specialist AV stores and see what they propose. It can be fairly complex setting up one of these systems, especially if you need something thats simple to use.

P.S. in a room that size, don't forget to budget for a decent audio setup.

Get the cheapest possible setup - it means they'll be more of the
interhitance left over.
